Note that the game interface and full rules are not translated from English, so mainly the boards generated and the allowed guesses will change.

There are no sound options as Squardle doesn't play any sounds. Ever. Especially not today.

Bigger sized hints
Use this setting to make the hints on 5x5 boards default to taking up one third of their square's width and height instead of one fourth.
This gain in size comes as a tradeoff though: If enabled, after guess #9, the relative position of each hints in their square will no
longer corresponds to what guess generated them. (You can long-press or right-click on a hint to still see this info.)
Auto-hide hints
Enabling these options will cause these hints to be hidden as soon as they are placed on the board.
Green: Black: Repeated:
Auto-fade white hints
Enabling this option will cause white hints to fade (but still be visible) if you find, or have found, another colored hint for the same letter.
With this option enabled the non-faded white hints are the letters you still need to remember to place on the board that don't have other hints telling you to do so.
Well, assuming you haven't also manually faded or unfaded any white hints.
Auto-fade yellow, red, and orange hints
Enabling this option will cause yellow, red, and orange hints to fade once you've solved the whole row or column they're pointing along.
Disable click to hide hints
This setting disables "hidden" as a hint state you can toggle to by clicking. (That is, if auto-hide is turned on it can still hide hints.)
Unless you disable both click to hide and fade (below) you can click to still unhide hints that were previously auto-hidden.
Disable click to fade hints
Unless you disable both click to fade and hide (above) you can still click to unfade hints that were previously auto-faded.
TIP: Fading out your already used hints is still the best way to combat information overload while playing. So avoid
activating this setting unless you're an experienced Squardle player and you know what you're doing.
Lower opacity for hidden hints
Enable this option to make hidden hints get the same opacity as faded hints (while still being small and hide the letter). This can help with making
the hidden hints even less attention-grabbing while scanning the board.
Keyboard options
Use old keyboard style
How Squardle's keyboard used to look. Enable this option if you want the keyboard to only have keys that are purple, light gray, and dark gray.
Show dark gray keyboard clues
Turn any letter that can't be placed in either direction for the next guess dark gray on the keyboard. This ignores fully solved words.
So it will darken keys for letters that already appear in a fully solved word if your hints say that the letter can't go anywhere in the unsolved word you're currently guessing.
Show yellow, red, and orange keyboard clues
Display yellow and red keyboard keys for the row and column you're about to guess in next. Keys where the letter has a hint in that row or column that has
more arrows than the number of solved such letters in that direction will turn yellow or red. Note that this means that already greened squares won't cause the key
to be yellow or red, even if there are yellow or red hints. Keys that would be both yellow and red turn orange instead.
Colorblind friendly keyboard
Display arrows on the keyboard for yellow, red and orange keys. (Note that the keyboard will never display double or triple arrows.)
Backspace deletes full guess
With this option enabled the backspace will delete not just the last letter in your current guess.
NEW! Highlight current column and row
Make the squares where you're currently guessing a lighter shade of gray.
NEW! Show dark square warnings when using black or dark gray letters
Temporarily darken the squares where you've typed in letters with black or dark gray keyboard keys. This is especially useful if you're
using a physical keyboard where it's easier to miss that you've just typed a black letter, as it gives you a warning that you're about to guess a letter you might not want to use.
Note that guessing letters that can't be in the answer in either direction can still be strategic if it makes words that let you use letter combinations you couldn't
otherwise guess. Already solved squares are never darkened.
Notes options
Notes can normally be set as a guess or as certain. Disable either (or both) if you don't use them to save a few clicks or misclicks.
Disable "Mark note as guess":

Enable this option to make the first click on a square without a note make a note marked as a guess instead of as certain. (This setting is not available if either note type is disabled.)
Export, import, or delete your game data
Data about your stats and streaks, as well as your current settings are saved as local cookies on your device.
Here are options to backup your cookies by exporting them as a string of text, import cookies from a previous backup, or to delete all stats and streaks data.
Because you seem to have cookies disabled, these tools are not available. You need to complete your current game to access the settings for game data. Export game data as text string

The new version shows how the grid looked after your first solved word and says how many guesses that took. Enable this option if you prefer to keep using the old share emoji that always shows how the board looked after you had guessed once in each row and column.

Remove the startup instructions unless there's an update, and even then only show that page once.

Squardle update — What's new?
It's been a while since Squardle got any bigger updates. That's mainly because this one ballooned a bit in scope and had quite a few sneaky bugs to iron out. Shoutouts to all my wonderful Patreon supporters, both for helping me with the beta testing of the new stuff, as well as for making it possible for me to keep working on Squardle while happily deleting all e-mails telling me I could make big $$$ by putting ads on this site.
This update comes with two brand new game modes as well as some new quality of life features and minor tweaks. Two of the new features are optional, so if you want minimal changes for how the game looks you can disable them here on the settings page.
Squardle 34 is a new game mode with a new board type that has 34 squares and 12 words to solve on a 6x6 board.
You're still guessing 5-letter words though. There are walls between some squares to indicate where each word starts and ends.
Note that hints can point through these walls. This means that for example, a yellow hint in a row no longer means that the yellow letter has to go in the word you guessed; it could go in the square that's on the other side of a wall.
Squardle Distance 34
Squardle Distance 34 is the second new game mode of this update. As its name implies it uses the same new board as Squardle 34,
but it also completely changes how hints work! Instead of hints relating to the guessed letter being in the row or column,
this game mode gives you hints about the guessed letter's distance to that letter's closest position in the solution.
I'm very happy with how Squardle Distance turned out — the gameplay aspect of trying to triangulate where each letter can go has the puzzling feel I was hoping it would. That said, it is a huge change to how you play Squardle, and at least for me it's very much a harder rules set. Neither of the new game modes save stats and streaks, so don't feel bad if it takes you several tries to get your first win.

New settings
Highlight where you're guessing
I've gotten feedback from multiple players that the two gray arrows pointing to the row and column you're currently guessing are a bit too discrete. Those arrows became extra difficult to see on the board type that the new game modes use. So now, assuming you leave the setting enabled, the squares you're currently in guessing in will be a lighter shade of gray.
Darken square if guessing already eliminated letters
Black (and dark gray) letters on the keyboard are easy enough to avoid using if you're playing on a mobile device. But if you're using a physical keyboard it's been a bit too easy to not be looking at the screen's keyboard and thus make a guess you didn't really want to make. This leads to feel bad moments because you feel that you should have caught yourself. It's been extra tricky if you have the setting "auto-hide black hints" turned on. So if you leave this setting enabled, typing in a guess for a letter that's already black or dark gray on the keyboard will make the squares you typed that letter into turn a little darker before you complete the guess, to give you a warning. This won't happen if the squares where you typed the letter were already solved.
Yes, this does make the game slightly easier. But Squardle is still plenty difficult, and having the UI be unclear really isn't where I want the difficulty to be coming from.
Of course, there are situations where guessing a black letter can be a good strategy; typically when it lets you make a valid word to guess other letters you want to try out while still solving the remaining letters in a word. So the darkened squares are only there to make sure that you know that you're about to guess a letter that's already darkened on the keyboard.

Squardle auf Deutsch
Das Spiel nutzt zwar deutsche Wörter, allerdings sind die Grafiken, vollständigen Regeln, FAQ und die Benutzeroberfläche noch auf Englisch.
Wie wird gespielt?
Ziel des Spiels ist es, die sechs Wörter in den Zeilen und Spalten zu erraten, bevor die Versuche aufgebraucht sind.
Gespielt wird durch die Eingabe Wörtern mit fünf Buchstaben und Bestätigung dieser mit der Enter-Taste. Zur Eingabe kann entweder die Bildschirmtastatur oder auch die physische Tastatur eines Computers benutzt werden. Das eingegebene Wort erscheint stets sowohl in einer Reihe als auch einer Spalte. Jedes ausgefüllte Feld gibt einen Hinweis. Die Hinweise erscheinen in Form kleiner Markierungen (siehe unten).
Zu Beginn erhält man zehn Versuche. Errät man ein Wort vollständig, so erhält man einen zusätzlichen Versuch. Errät man das letzte Wort vollständig, bevor die Versuche aufgebraucht sind, so hat man das Spiel gewonnen.
Ein Wort gilt als gelöst, wenn alle Buchstaben gelöst (grün) sind, auch wenn es nicht selbst eingegeben wurde.
Welche Zeile und Spalte gerade eingegeben wird, kann nicht selbst gewählt werden, sondern wird vom Spiel abgewechselt. Vollständig gelöste Spalte-Zeile-Paare werden automatisch übersprungen. An den bei den grauen Pfeilen am Rand kann man sehen, wo gerade eingegeben wird.
In der Abbildung ist ein Spiel zu sehen. In diesem Beispiel fehlen nur noch die letzten Wörter "LARVE" und "PFEIL", um das Spiel zu gewinnen.
Was bedeuten die Farben der Hinweise?
Grün – Dieser Buchstabe ist im richtigen Feld. In diesem Fall wird das Feld selbst ebenfalls grün eingefärbt. Ziel ist es, alle 21 Felder grün einzufärben, bevor die Versuche aufgebraucht sind.
Gelb – Dieser Buchstabe ist in der richtigen Reihe, aber nicht in diesem Feld. Der Buchstabe ist mindestens so oft enthalten, wie schwarze Pfeilpaare angezeigt werden. Dabei werden bereits gelöste Buchstaben mitgezählt. Um zwei oder drei Pfeilpaare zu erhalten muss ein Wort geraten werden, das den Buchstaben ebenso zwei bzw. drei Mal enthält. Ein gelber Hinweis bedeutet auch, dass der Buchstabe in der Spalte nicht enthalten ist.
Rot – Dieser Buchstabe ist in der richtigen Spalte, aber nicht in diesem Feld. Der Buchstabe ist mindestens so oft enthalten, wie weiße Pfeilpaare angezeigt werden, wie bei den gelben Hinweisen. Ein roter Hinweis bedeutet auch, dass der Buchstabe in der Zeile nicht enthalten ist.
Orange – Orange Hinweise entsprechen einem gelben und roten Hinweis, der Buchstabe ist also in Reihe und Spalte enthalten, aber nicht in diesem Feld. Die Pfeilpaare entsprechen denen bei gelben und roten Hinweisen.
Weiß – Dieser Buchstabe kommt in einem Feld vor, aber nicht in dieser Zeile oder Spalte.
Schwarz – Dieser Buchstabe kommt in gar keinem Feld vor.
Blauer Kreis – Klickt man direkt auf ein ungelöstes Feld und tippt dann einen Buchstaben ein, so erscheint er in einem blauen Kreis. Diese Funktion kann als Merkhilfe genutzt werden.
Wie in Kreuzworträtseln gilt: Ä = AE, Ö = OE, Ü = UE und ß = SS.

Jag som utvecklar Squardle är svensk. Därför har Squardle en svensk ordlista för bräden på svenska trots att andelen svenska spelare inte är jättestor.
Jag har dock inte översatt engelskan i instruktionerna, grafiken och i användargränssnittet. Om du inte kan engelska alls så kan det därför i nuläget

How to play Squardle
Squardle is a Wordle variation where you solve a board of interlocking words in a 5x5 grid by guessing words and getting colored hints.
Hint types
Green – This letter is in its correct square. A square that's solved stays green for the rest of the game.

Yellow, red, and orange – This letter is not in the guessed square, but it is in the same row, column, or both, as indicated by the arrow pairs on the hint.
White – This letter isn't in this row or column, but it appears somewhere else on the board.
Black – This letter doesn't appear on the board at all.

Multiple arrows – To get a hint with multiple arrow pairs, both the answer and the guess for that row or column have to include multiples of the letter. You always get the lowest number of arrows between those two, unless the square's green.
So for example, if the answer for a row is GEESE and you guess LEVEL in that row, the first E will be green and the second E will be a double-arrowed yellow. Note that it's not a triple-arrowed yellow, despite the answer having three Es, since the guess only placed two Es in the row.
Making guesses
Your guesses will go into both a row and a column. You don't get to pick where you enter your next guess, the game will automatically cycle through the rows and columns. You can enter notes in blue circles to remember what letter you want to try in a square on a later guess by clicking on a square and typing in the letter.
You start with 10 guesses and can earn up to 5 bonus guesses by solving words. Solving the 6th and final word wins the game!

O que significam as cores das faixas?
Verde – Esta letra está no quadrado correto. Nesse caso, o próprio quadrado também fica verde. O objetivo é colorir todos os 21 quadrados de verde antes que as tentativas acabem.
Amarelo – Esta letra está na linha correta, mas não no quadrado correto. A letra é incluída na linha pelo menos tantas vezes quanto os pares de setas são mostrados. Squardle ist auf Deutsch verfügbar. Das Spiel nutzt zwar deutsche Wörter, allerdings sind die Grafiken, vollständigen Regeln, FAQ und die Benutzeroberfläche noch auf Englisch.
Wie wird gespielt?
Ziel des Spiels ist es, die sechs Wörter in den Zeilen und Spalten zu erraten, bevor die Versuche aufgebraucht sind.
Gespielt wird durch die Eingabe Wörtern mit fünf Buchstaben und Bestätigung dieser mit der Enter-Taste. Zur Eingabe kann entweder die Bildschirmtastatur oder auch die physische Tastatur eines Computers benutzt werden. Das eingegebene Wort erscheint stets sowohl in einer Reihe als auch einer Spalte. Jedes ausgefüllte Feld gibt einen Hinweis. Die Hinweise erscheinen in Form kleiner Markierungen (siehe unten).
Zu Beginn erhält man zehn Versuche. Errät man ein Wort vollständig, so erhält man einen zusätzlichen Versuch. Errät man das letzte Wort vollständig, bevor die Versuche aufgebraucht sind, so hat man das Spiel gewonnen.
Ein Wort gilt als gelöst, wenn alle Buchstaben gelöst (grün) sind, auch wenn es nicht selbst eingegeben wurde.
Welche Zeile und Spalte gerade eingegeben wird, kann nicht selbst gewählt werden, sondern wird vom Spiel abgewechselt. Vollständig gelöste Spalte-Zeile-Paare werden automatisch übersprungen. An den bei den grauen Pfeilen am Rand kann man sehen, wo gerade eingegeben wird.
In der Abbildung ist ein Spiel zu sehen. In diesem Beispiel fehlen nur noch die letzten Wörter "LARVE" und "PFEIL", um das Spiel zu gewinnen.
Was bedeuten die Farben der Hinweise?
Grün – Dieser Buchstabe ist im richtigen Feld. In diesem Fall wird das Feld selbst ebenfalls grün eingefärbt. Ziel ist es, alle 21 Felder grün einzufärben, bevor die Versuche aufgebraucht sind.
Gelb – Dieser Buchstabe ist in der richtigen Reihe, aber nicht in diesem Feld. Der Buchstabe ist mindestens so oft enthalten, wie schwarze Pfeilpaare angezeigt werden. Dabei werden bereits gelöste Buchstaben mitgezählt. Um zwei oder drei Pfeilpaare zu erhalten muss ein Wort geraten werden, das den Buchstaben ebenso zwei bzw. drei Mal enthält. Ein gelber Hinweis bedeutet auch, dass der Buchstabe in der Spalte nicht enthalten ist.
Rot – Dieser Buchstabe ist in der richtigen Spalte, aber nicht in diesem Feld. Der Buchstabe ist mindestens so oft enthalten, wie weiße Pfeilpaare angezeigt werden, wie bei den gelben Hinweisen. Ein roter Hinweis bedeutet auch, dass der Buchstabe in der Zeile nicht enthalten ist.
Orange – Orange Hinweise entsprechen einem gelben und roten Hinweis, der Buchstabe ist also in Reihe und Spalte enthalten, aber nicht in diesem Feld. Die Pfeilpaare entsprechen denen bei gelben und roten Hinweisen.
Weiß – Dieser Buchstabe kommt in einem Feld vor, aber nicht in dieser Zeile oder Spalte.
Schwarz – Dieser Buchstabe kommt in gar keinem Feld vor.
Blauer Kreis – Klickt man direkt auf ein ungelöstes Feld und tippt dann einen Buchstaben ein, so erscheint er in einem blauen Kreis. Diese Funktion kann als Merkhilfe genutzt werden.
Wie in Kreuzworträtseln gilt: Ä = AE, Ö = OE, Ü = UE und ß = SS.

WHAT IS THIS?
Squardle is a word game based on the viral hit game Wordle by Josh Wardle. If you somehow have found your way here without knowing what Wordle is, you can play it
here
, and I recommend doing so before
trying out Squardle. It you don't want to do that: Wordle is like the game Mastermind, only you're guessing five letter words instead of sequences of colors.
Squardle is a 2D Wordle variant, "Squared Wordle" if you will.
ISN'T WORDLE ALREADY IN 2D?
OK, sure. But in Squardle the goal of the game is to figure out a 5x5 grid with six words instead of the "1x5" solution in Wordle.
HOW DO I PLAY?
To play, type a five-letter word and press enter. You can use either the keyboard on your screen,
or a physical keyboard if you're playing on a computer. Your typed guess will appear in both a row and a column,
and each filled square will get a clue. The clues come in the form of colored squares. See below for their meanings.
You get 10 guesses to start with. The first five words you solve all the squares for give you one bonus guess each. Solving all six words wins you the game. Note that you don't have to use a guess on the specific word for it to be considered solved. Solved squares stay green, and making all of a word's letters green at any point during the game is enough to get the word's bonus guess.
To the left is a screenshot from a game that's nearly over. On that board it looks like the final guess should be CUBIC to turn the remaining two gray squares green and win!
HOW DO I CHANGE WHERE I ENTER MY GUESS?
You don't. The rows and columns will be cycled through automatically, each guess moving the next guess to the next row and
column. If you've already found all green letters for both that row and column it will skip over them for the rest
of the game. The two arrows outside the grid indicate where your next guess will be entered.
In Weekly Squardle the rule for what positions are skipped is slightly modified.
WAIT, WHAT'S WEEKLY SQUARDLE?
It's an (even) harder game mode for Squardle where the four holes on the board are removed. A new Weekly Squardle board released each Sunday. I strongly advise learning how to play normal Squardle before attempting it.

Weekly Squardle has the following rules changes:
● The four holes on the board are gone. This means that there are 10 words to solve.
● There are now 8 bonus guesses to collect. Why only 8? A final winning guess will always solve
at least both its row and column, so those two final winning words don't generate bonus guesses.
This is for the same reason the sixth word in daily/freeplay mode doesn't give a bonus guess: I wanted it possible to win
by the skin of your teeth, with 0 guesses remaining. Note that if your winning guess solves more than two words you
will still get bonus guesses for the "extra" solved words. This means that, assuming you win, you're always given a
constant number of bonus guesses for each game mode. So using fewer guesses to win in a game mode always gives you that many more
guesses remaining in the end.
● Weekly Squardle in English uses an expanded word list of possible
answers. Otherwise there simply aren't enough legal boards! All answers are of course still English words that
would be legal in Scrabble; they're just picked from a slightly longer list than Wordle's original list of
answers that the normal Squardle boards use.
● As mentioned above, the cycling through of where to enter the next guess is slightly kinder:
If only a single row or column has more than one unsolved letters in it, you will always get to guess there. In other words,
if the board could be solved by guessing a single word, you will get to guess that word rather than sometimes
being forced to guess the letters in that word one at a time. The game mode Squardle 24 also uses this rule,
but this still can't make you enter a guess in the row/column of its single hole square.
I WANT TO PLAY MORE WEEKLY SQUARDLE! CAN I GET MORE THAN ONE BOARD A WEEK?

WHAT DO THE COLORED SQUARES WITH LETTERS MEAN?
These are the colors of hints in Squardle:
Green – This letter is in the correct square. Finding a green square permanently turns the big square green as well. The goal of the game is to make all 21 squares in the grid green before you run out of guesses.

Yellow
– This letter is in the correct row, but not in the correct square.
Double and triple pair of arrows can show up if both your guess and the answer has multiples of that letter in the row. The number of arrow pairs is determined by the lowest number between the number of times your guess placed that letter in the row and the number of times that letter appears in the row. Note that this count includes letters in green clues. This is slightly different from how Wordle works, but it gives the same amount of information. In Squardle, a guess getting a single arrow yellow clue together with a green clue for the same letter means that there isn't two of that letter in the row; otherwise you'd have gotten a double arrow as your guess placed two of that letter there.
Any yellow clue means that the letter doesn't appear anywhere in its column.

Red
– This letter is in the correct column, but not in the correct square.
Double and triple arrow pairs work in the same way as for yellow hints, except for columns instead of row. That is, make a guess that places multiple of the same letter in a column and you could get a hint with up to that many arrows, depending on if the answer also has multiples.
Any red clue also means that the letter doesn't appear anywhere in its row.
Orange
– Orange squares are the ones that would be both yellow and red.
So this letter appears both in the row and in the column, but not in this square. As with yellow and red clues,
the number of pairs of arrows pointing towards the row or column indicate that there are at least
this many of the orange clue's letter in the row or column.
White – This letter appears somewhere in the solved grid, but not in this row or column.
Black – This letter doesn't appear at all in the solved grid.
WHY DIDN'T I GET A DOUBLE ARROW? WHEN I LOOKED AT THE SOLUTION THE WORD HAD TWO OF A LETTER THAT I GOT A SINGLE ARROW CLUE FOR.
To get a double or triple arrow clue for a letter you must also make a guess that puts 2 or 3 copies of that letter in that row or column.
The number of arrow pairs on the clue always indicate that there are at least that many of that letter in that direction.
It doesn't say that there can't be more. So just like Wordle won't tell you that there should be more copies of a letter that you only
guessed a single copy of, Squardle won't either.
This means that it's possible for a single square in Squardle to have clues for the same letter and of the same color, but with a different number of arrows in the clues; you just had a different number of that letter in the guesses that gave you those clues.
Also note that the guess with multiples of a letter has to be made in the row or column that has multiples of that letter for you to get a hint with a double arrow. So it's not enough that only one of the repeated letters are in the row or column where the answer has two of that letter.
I understand that this rule is a bit confusing at first. But the alternative I tried first, where the clues for a row or column were more analogous to how it works in Wordle, proved to be even more confusing; with that system it was possible to get hints for the same letters that were placed in the same square but that still got different colors. Pretty much everyone thought that was a bug the first time they had it happen to them.
SO HOW CAN I TELL WHERE I'VE MADE A GUESS WITH REPEATING LETTERS?
There are two ways to tell what guess generated what hint:
- The first way is to look at the relative position of the hint in its square. The hints in the same relative position were placed there by the same guess. This method is assuming that you're playing on a 5x5 board, and that you haven't turned on the setting for "Bigger sized hints".
- The other way to tell is by right-clicking or long-pressing on any hint. This shows a magenta highlight around all hints that were created by the same guess.
WAIT, WHY WOULDN'T I BE PLAYING ON A 5x5 BOARD?
You might want to check out the option "Other game modes" in the main menu. Squardle XL has 6x6 boards
and Squardle XXL has 7x7 boards. That page also has the game modes Squardle 24, Squardle Obscure, and Squardle Speedrun.
WHY ISN'T THE BOARD CENTERED? CAN YOU CENTER THE BOARD FOR ME?
It's not centered because, uh... Because I didn't think to so when I first made the game?
Any change I make to the default now would upset a small but vocal subset of players.
But sure, you can center the board by adding "/center/" after "/squardle" in game's URL. Or by clicking here.
I WANT TO IGNORE SOME CLUES THAT ARE NO LONGER HELPFUL! CAN I GET SOME HELP WITH IGNORING THEM?
Sure! If you have the default settings you can click any small clue to fade it out slightly. Click it again to hide the
letter completely and shrink to a smaller square of its color. Click it a third time to bring it back up to full visibility.
In the example below, the yellow S clues have been faded out by the player to mark them as "found" as a green S in the row is located. The white C clue has also been faded out, presumably because a colored C hint's been found elsewhere in the grid. The player will still want to be able to see the faded clues though, as they tell them about letters that can't go in those columns and, for the C, row; that's why those hints are faded and no hidden.
The green S clue and two black clues have been hidden to avoid screen clutter even further. The player will have to rely on the colors on the keyboard to see what letters have turned black.

There are also some options on the settings page to automatically hide or fade different types of hints.
I STILL KEEP MISSING HINTS. IS THERE A WAY TO HIGHLIGHT ALL HINTS AND NOTES WITH A SPECIFIC LETTER?
Yep! You can either right-click or long-press a key on the on-screen keyboard to get a magenta
outline around all hints with that letter. Any notes you've made about that letter will also turn magenta.
WHAT DO THE KEYBOARD'S COLORS MEAN?
The key thing to understand about the keys is that yellow, red, orange, and dark gray keys are giving
information specifically about your next guess.
Purple – This letter has yet to be guessed.
Black – This letter has gotten at least one black clue on the board. As such it won't appear anywhere in the solved grid.
Dark gray – Based on the hints on the board, this letter can neither be in the row nor column you're currently guessing. If you've already solved either the row or the column where you're guessing, letters that can't appear in the unsolved word will turn gray even if the solved word has that letter in green.
Yellow – Based on the hints on the board, at least one copy of this letter still needs to be found in the row. That is, if the max number of horizontal arrows on a hint you've found in this row is higher than the number of green squares for that letter, the key for that letter turns yellow.
Red – Based on the hints on the board, at least one copy of this letter still needs to be found in the column.
Orange – Based on the hints on the board, at least one copy of this letter still needs to be found in both the row and the column.
White – This letter doesn't fit any of the situations above. This means that the letter could go in the row and/or the column you're currently guessing, but there's no clue directly indicating that it must go there.
I PREFER THE OLD KEYBOARD, CAN YOU CHANGE IT BACK?
You can change it back yourself! There's a setting that lets you play using the old keyboard.
You can also disable only the dark gray keys or disable the yellow, red, and orange keys.
If the new color keys lack of arrows cause issues for you, either because you're color blind or because you don't want to have to remember what color means what direction, there's also an option to show the arrows on yellow, red, and orange keyboard keys.
WHY DOESN'T THE KEYBOARD SHOW GREEN LETTERS?
When asking for feedback trying to figure out how the colorful keyboard should function it became clear that the
players I asked had many different ideas for what felt intuitive to them for when exactly a key should become
green. So any choice I made for green keys would likely confuse a large portion of the players, and the gain in information
given by green keys wasn't all that big no matter how exactly they worked.
WHAT IF I KNOW WHAT LETTER A SQUARE SHOULD BE BUT IT'S NOT TIME TO ENTER A GUESS THERE YET?
That sounds like a great time to use the note tool. Click on any unsolved square to go into note taking mode. The square will get a blue circle and your keyboard will turn blue. Type the letter you want to remember for the square to finish the note. If you don't want to make a note, your can cancel editing it by clicking anywhere on the board. To remove or change a note, click it and use Backspace or press another letter instead. Notes will stay on the board until your solve their square or remove them.
BUT WHAT IF I'M NOT SURE ABOUT A SQUARE AND WANT TO MARK IT AS A GUESS?
Then make a note as described above but click the square with the note twice instead of once. Notes that are marked as guesses get a thick unfilled blue circle instead of the filled circle. You can also click an already made note twice to toggle the note's type between "certain" and "guess".

Because I had the idea. I thought the quickest way of getting it to stop taking up space in my head was to make

WHY DON'T YOU REMOVE THOSE?
Daily and Freeplay Squardle currently uses word lists for possible answers and allowed guesses based on the lists
Wordle originally used. The list of possible answers is shorter than the list of allowed guesses specifically to
remove the most obscure words. So please don't blame me for the answers list including words like SYNOD and OVOID.
Or do blame me, but understand that I don't feel all that responsible for that decision.
That said, for Weekly Squardle I have had to expand the list of answers.
To still not be put in a position where I had to pick what words are considered the most
well-known myself I coded up this

So the words in Weekly Squardle were in effect voted on by the users on that page. If you want to help out for
future updates you can drag the most common words to the top and place any word you didn't know was a word below
the red line. Make sure you're not blocking Google Analytics or your sorting data won't be recorded.
I GOT A BOARD WITH A PROPER NOUN!
WHY DON'T YOU REMOVE THOSE?
All the English (and Swedish) words that are in the word list for answers or
guesses have definitions that aren't proper nouns. So the proper nouns have some other definition than the
one for the proper noun. So they can be written, (at least according to some dictionaries), without a starting
capital letter. For example: To ralph is an onomatopoeia for vomiting, you can eat off of fine china,
you can put english on the cue ball in pool, and something can peter out.
For Spanish, Portuguese, and German it's tricker. I've not found great word lists to use. I've tried to remove
them from the list of answers based on data from my word
sorting site
,
but how well that's gone depends on how many sorters I get for that language. German is especially tricky as all
German nouns start with a capital letter; their dictionaries seem to straight up include proper nouns.
WHY DOES THE SHARE FUNCTION SHOW MY GAME AFTER MY FIRST CORRECT GUESS WHEN I WIN? I SOLVED ALL THE SQUARES!
Because having every winning shared board be the same grid of all green squares felt boring.
Making it more colorful and actually containing some info about your game seemed like a good
idea, both to have it carry more information about your game, and to make anyone seeing the
squares more interested in trying the game out themselves.
HOW DO BONUS GUESSES WORK? I THINK I GOT ROBBED OF A BONUS GUESS!
Freeplay, daily, and speedrun boards have 5 bonus guesses to collect.
That's one fewer than the number of words to solve. Why? Because I wanted it possible to win with 0 guesses remaining
as I thought that would feel more dramatic than always having at least 1 guess remaining if you won. So the final
word solved doesn't give a bonus guess as you just won the game and won't need it. Note that this isn't the
same as saying that your final guess doesn't give bonus guesses! If your final guess solves more
words than just the sixth on the board, the first five still give bonus guesses. This
means that, assuming you win the board, using fewer total guesses to win always gives that many more guesses remaining.
Weekly boards have 8 bonus guesses to collect. That's two fewer than the number of words to solve, so what gives here? The reason is that solving the final square on the weekly board will always solve at a minimum two words; its row and its column. So for the same reason as for daily/freeplay, those two words don't give bonus guesses either.
Boards for Squardle 24, Squardle XL, and Squardle XXL all have 8 words to solve. As they have no guarantee that the winning guess solves more than a single word they all have 7 bonus guesses to collect.
Small aside, (because this FAQ apparently isn't long enough already): If I was first designing Squardle today, I would make it so that all solved words give bonus guesses. I underestimated both how much fun it is to get bonus guesses and how confusing the exception(s) would become. That said, it's sadly a bit too late to change this now. Any change would cause new confusion and also make it more difficult to compare your scores from before and after such a change. Remember: Any change that's not optional will upset a subset of my players. Making this type of change an optional setting wouldn't make sense though, as that would make comparing scores with other players extremely confusing.
WHY GIVE BONUS GUESSES AT ALL? COULDN'T YOU START THE PLAYER WITH MORE GUESSES INSTEAD?
This has to do with something that annoyed me in
Dordle
and the other multi-word variants of Wordle I had played before designing Squardle: In those games it's possible to have
figured out the solution to all the words but not have enough guesses left to guess them.
This is a feel-bad moment I wanted to avoid in Squardle, so making it so that a correct guess can't lose
the game made sense. Plus, it's fun to get bonus guesses, especially when you get multiple bonus
guesses in a single turn!
Secret Squardle trivia time! Squardle is almost more a Dordle-variant than it is a Wordle-variant! The reason you guess a row and a column at the same time in Squardle directly inspired by Dordle. The reason for me wanting it to work that way was also to make it so that fewer guesses could populate the grid with hints. This speeds up the game a lot. The reason for greened squares staying green in Squardle was in response to me not liking how that worked in Dordle, as typing in an already fully greened word just felt like busywork. That said, I very much like Dordle, and if you haven't tried it you should go play it!

On Android phones or tablets: If your home screen's locked you need to first unlock it: Long press the home screen > Settings > Toggle "Lock Home screen" off. Then, if your standard browser is Samsung Internet or Chrome, tap the three dots icon in the top right corner, then select the option "Add to Home Screen". If you don't see such an option it's probably because you're on the page in some other app, like Facebook or Twitter. Then instead tap the three dots icon (or however the menu button looks in the app you're using) and select the option "Open in [whatever browser you've set as your default]". If that browser's Samsung Internet or Chrome, just follow the steps above. If not, then I'm going to hope you're tech savvy enough to figure this out yourself? If not, you can probably become a more tech savvy person by typing "[browser name] add web page to home screen" into Google.
On an iPhone or iPad: Tap the icon with a right-pointing arrow coming out of a box along the top of the Safari window to open a drop-down menu. Then select "Add to Home Screen". (At least those are the instructions I found by Googling.)
CAN I BACKUP MY GAME DATA? IS THERE A WAY TO TRANSFER MY STATS TO A NEW PHONE OR COMPUTER?
You can export and import cookie data using the tools on the settings page. The cookie data is exported as a string of
text that you can save in a document of e-mail to yourself. The import feature lets you overwrite all your
Squardle game data with the data from the export. If you only use the export function as a way to backup your stats you
don't have to use the import function unless something happens to your cookies. If you've bought a new computer or mobile
device you can export your stats from the old device and import them onto your new device. Note that this only copies
your data from one device to the other — it doesn't link the game devices as a shared account. So this sort of
transfer is only viable as a one time fix if you intend to stop playing on your old device.
Technically you could end each gaming session by exporting your stats and e-mail yourself the resulting text string to have access to it on any other device(s) you play on. If you then also remember to start each play session after swapping device by importing your latest text string, then yes, this system could keep multiple devices in sync. But honestly, that seems like way more work than manually adding together your listed stats between devices if you want to find out your average guesses remaining for all devices you play on.
SO WHY CAN'T I JUST LOG IN TO A SERVER THAT KEEPS MY DATA IN ONE ACCOUNT?
Honestly, because I don't know enough database programming to make that happen. I'd either have to get a whole new skill set or take on outside help to code any feature like that.

For other bugs, first check that you're on the current version of Squardle, as described at the top of the settings page. If the problem is something you can take a screenshot of, make sure you include one. If the bug might in some way relate to your cookies, use the export feature on the settings page and include the text string from the export with your bug report — that can greatly help me with reproducing many bugs.

Bonus Weekly Boards
My Patreon supporters get access to the bonus Weekly Squardle boards. Click below to play, or to get more info about the bonus boards and how you can become a supporter
to get access to them. The bonus boards aren't time limited, so even if you just joined as a supporter you can play (and replay) all of the bonus boards. Every Wednesday
a new bonus board is released, making the number of available bonus weekly boards match the current Weekly Squardle's number.
Squardle 34 is a game mode where the board has 34 squares. It has twelve 5-letter words on a 6x6 board that's missing two corner squares.

For each pair of row and column you only get to guess the five letters that form a word there, so you're not filling out the full row and column.
This board layout can take some getting used to, but you can still look for the small gray arrows to know where your next guess will be entered.
Note that the hints are not stopped by the walls!
So for example, in this game mode, getting a yellow hint in the row doesn't necessarily mean that the yellow letter acctually goes in that word;
the hint could also be referring to the square on the other side of a vertical wall in that row!
Squardle 34
The board size means the words you guess are shorter than the full length of the board. To make this work the words in every other row and column are offset
by one square and there are eight walls dividing the middle rows and columns into 5+1 squares to indicate where each word starts and ends.
You start with ten guesses and there are a whole eleven bonus guesses to unlock. Note that you earn bonus guesses for solving full words,
not for solving full rows or columns.
Squardle Distance 34
Squardle Distance is a ruleset where you no longer get hints about if the guessed letter is in to row and/or column of where you guessed it. Instead you get hints telling you about the distance to the closest square that the guessed letter should go in.

In this mode you can no longer get yellow, red or orange hints. Squardle Distance instead uses the following types of hints:

To make all this less of a hassle to remember, blue, purple, brown, and white hints all have their possible distances written in their top left corner.
The example image to the right is showing each square's distance from the green square.
Assuming that the green square has a letter that's only used once on the whole solved board,
each square in the example has the color of the hint you'd get for that guessing that letter there.
If you make a note for a letter you're certain of where it should go based on the hints you've gotten, I recommend
that you manually fade out the hints about that letter by clicking. Just like in normal Squardle, you still need
to pay some attention to the faded hints as they still tell you where that letter can't go.
The setting "auto-fade white hints" doesn't change anything in Squardle Distance. If you have the settings
to auto-hide green, black, and/or repeated hints turned on they should still work.

How do distances work? Do the walls between squares matter?
Distance is calculated using "taxicab geometry",
also known as "Manhattan geometry" due to the grid like layout of streets and avenues there.
This means that squares 1 diagonal space away from each other are considered to be at a distance of 2 squares from each other.
(Instead of it being 1.41421 squares away as it would be in Euclidean geometry.) However, these taxis can apparently run through walls?
So the distance calculations ignore any of the "walls" separating some of the words on the board.
To put it another way, if we're only allowed to move between squares by going up, right, down or left one step at a time,
but we are allowed to move through walls, then the distance between two squares is the lowest number of such steps
needed to move between those squares.
Why are some hints automatically faded out?
When you get a green square by correctly guessing a letter's position all other hints you have about that letter
are automatically faded if they are in range to "see" the green letter. This means that unfaded hints that
aren't green or black are the letters you know that you still need to place somewhere on the board.
Can these types of hints only be played on the 34-square board?
As the whole idea for Squardle Distance is that you should use multiple hints for a letter to triangulate where it goes,
this ruleset works best on bigger boards that don't have a lot of holes. So for now, "Squardle Distance 34" is the only way to play with this hint type.
But if Squardle Distance becomes popular it's very possible that I'll add other board types for it in the future. I even briefly toyed with the idea of
spinning it off as its own daily word game.
Squardle 24 is a game mode that has 24 squares to solve on a 5x5 board. You start with 9 guesses.
Show rules for Squardle 24
The single hole on the 5x5 board will be randomly placed in one of the 5 squares on the diagonal where your
entered guesses could overlap. The board has 8 words, all of length 5. So the adjacent squares
in the row or column with the hole do not (necessarily) form any words as indicated by the walls there.
The cycling determining where you enter your guess will skip the position with the hole.
Squardle 24 doesn't store any stats and you can play it as much as you want. If you want to
share a specific board with someone else, you can do so by clicking the Squardle logo after starting the
game. This moves you to "screenshot mode" before the game's over and lets you see the URL to
your current board.
Squardle XS is a game mode that uses a 4x4 board without holes. This obviously means that you'll have to guess 4-letter words.
It also means that the board has 16 squares and 8 words to solve. You start with only 6 guesses and there are 6 bonus guesses to unlock.

Is normal Squardle not big enough for you? In Squardle XL you play on a 6x6 grid that has eight 6-letter words to solve. You start with 10 guesses, but as there are two more bonus guesses to earn this isn't quite as unfair as it might sound.
Compared to normal Squardle, the English word list for Squardle XL intentionally has a slightly higher tolerance for how obscure words can show up as an answer. That said, only about 38% of the 6-letter words that are legal guesses can show up as an answer, so most of the words deemed too strange have been removed.
Squardle XL does not store any record of your result, but you can of course still use screenshot mode or share the emoji grid you get at the end of the game. Both those options include a link for other players to play the same XL board you just played.

Squardle XXL
Is Squardle XL still not big enough for you? Squardle XXL gives you eight 7-letter words to solve! You still only start with the normal 10 guesses. Given that there are 40 squares to solve compared to the normal 21 this mode is a real challenge!
Compared to normal Squardle, the English word list for Squardle XXL intentionally has a slightly higher tolerance for how obscure words can show up as an answer. That said, less than 12% of the 7-letter words that are legal guesses can show up as an answer, so most of the words deemed too strange have been removed. (12% might sound much lower than the 38% in Squardle XL, but there are a lot higher ratio of obscure words in the language as the words get longer.)
Squardle XXL does not store any record of your result, but you can of course still use screenshot mode or share the emoji grid you get at the end of the game. Both those options include a link for other players to play the same XXL board you just played.

Squardle Obscure is a mode where words that are much less commonly used are allowed to show up as answers.
There is also a slightly higher tolerance for loan words, and regional or lesser used spellings.
The allowed answers are based on the crowdsourced data from people who've helped me sort words by
how well-known they think those words are. The least known 57% of the words still won't show up as answers.
Because frankly, most of those words would feel unfair to include even in difficult crossword puzzles as
they are some combination of archaic, very regional and/or are an alternate spellings of a word.
If you do turn on the toggle for brutally obscure words, all bets are off though!
Squardle Obscure doesn't save any stats. This means you're unlikely to compare your results with anyone else's,
so therefore I can let you customize your rules!

Squardle Speedrun
This game mode is exactly what is sounds like: A timed way to play Squardle. In a Squardle Speedrun your goal is to win three consecutive games of normal
Squardle boards as quickly as possible. You get a score based on your times and the number of guesses you had at the end of each board.

Your base score for a single board is 360000 divided by your time in seconds. This means that it's equal to the number of boards you could have solved in 100 hours
if you kept up the same pace for that long. This base score then gets a 10% bonus for every guess remaining.
So for example, if you solve a board in 6 minutes with 4 guesses remaining that's (360000/360) * 1.4 = 1400 pts. The run's total
score is the sum of the scores of the three individual boards.
If you run out of guesses on a board, then that whole run ends. So to get a total time and score you will need to solve all three boards in the run.
But any new personal best for either time or score on an individual board that you did solve still counts even if you fail on a later board.
Squardle Speedruns do not affect any of your other stats for freeplay Squardle, so you won't tank your win rate by playing fast and loose under time pressure.
Since this means that in Squardle Speedrun there's no lasting consequences for losing you even get the option to cancel a game in progress:
If a run's going poorly you can press Esc or click the top Squardle logo during the game to get the options to either start
a new run, or to exit to the main menu.
Are flashing or blinking lights an issue for you?
Want to play vs a friend on the same boards?
You can add ?speedblink=off to the end of the URL to remove the blinking green/gray squares when you win a board. This is only a graphics change, so using it won't save you any time between the boards. If you're playing in another language than English, so that your URL already has a ? in it, then add &speedblink=off instead.
If you add ?s=SPEED followed by some random number at the end of the URL. That takes you to a set of speedrun boards with that number as their random seed. This way you can play a more fair vs match with a friend if you both play the same seed. Note that to prevent too easy cheating, high scores and best timed aren't saved in cookies if you play with a self-selected seed in this way. (You'll of course still get to see your scores and times listed on the page at the end of the game.);
