For those not familiar with it, Frutiger Aero is an aesthetic widely used in technology and graphic design in the mid 2000s up to its demise in around 2013. The term was coined retrospectively in 2017 by Sofi Xian of the Consumer Aesthetics Research Institute. During the era of its prime, the style didn't have a specific name, but its web counterpart was often referred to as "The Web 2.0 style" by critics, as it was the main visual style of the new social web, in contrast to the static websites of Web 1.0. This look, and by extension Frutiger Aero were mainly popularized by Apple's Aqua style, who first used skeuomorphism (the mimicking of real life objects) in the user interface of Mac OS X and the Apple website as far back as the year 2000.

"Frutiger Aero" derives its name from the Frutiger font designed by Adrian Frutiger, which came to inspire many humanist sans-serif typefaces such as Microsoft's Segoe UI and many other fonts used in computers in the early 2000s, and Aero the visual design and user experience guidelines of Windows Vista. The acronym "Aero" stands for "Authentic, Energetic, Reflective, and Open."

You probably have seen this style before in the glossy UI of Windows Vista and 7, the PS Vita, the Wii and Wii U, the PlayStation 3, or even on advertisements, stock images, and certain toys such as the iDog by Hasbro. Its main characteristics are bright and vibrant colors, glossy textures, glass/transparent materials, aurora borealis, skeuomorphism, bubbles, bokeh, macro photographs of grass, futurism, and humanism. It succeeded the Y2K style, which was named after the Year 2000 problem.

There are many subgenres that have been coined on the Aesthetics Wiki, the most famous being Frutiger Eco, Helvetica Aqua Aero, Frutiger Aurora, DORFic, Dark Aero, and Technozen.
