How to use it

How do I test my FPS in 3 steps?

    Start

    Press Start test or hit Space. Keep the tab in front — a background tab is throttled to about one frame a second.

    Wait ten seconds

    The first few seconds lock on to your refresh rate. Add stress with the slider if you want to see where your frame rate gives way.

    Read the result

    The average is your typical experience. The 1% low is how bad the worst moments get — that is the number that explains stutter.

What is an FPS test?

An FPS test measures how many frames per second your device draws. This one counts the frames your browser paints and times the gap between them, so it works on any phone, laptop or monitor with nothing to install.

What do the numbers mean?

Number What it tells you
Average FPS Your typical frame rate. The headline figure.
Frame time Milliseconds per frame. 60 FPS is 16.67 ms.
1% low The average of your worst 1% of frames. This is what stutter feels like.
0.1% low The rare hard hitch. Catches one-off freezes.
Stability Share of frames arriving on time. Above 95% is healthy.
Pacing How evenly frames are spaced. Uneven pacing looks bad even at a high average.
Input response Time from your click to the next frame, in Flick mode.

What FPS should I be getting?

Compare your average against your refresh rate, not against someone else's benchmark. A browser cannot draw faster than your screen refreshes, so 60 FPS on a 60 Hz laptop is a perfect score — and the same 60 on a 144 Hz monitor means something is capping you.

A result that stops dead on a round number — 60, 120, 144 — is your display, not your graphics card. Check what your screen is doing with the Refresh Rate Test.

Is FPS the same as refresh rate?

No. FPS is how many frames your device produces. Refresh rate, in hertz, is how often your screen replaces the image. The screen sets the ceiling — extra frames above it are never shown.

Why is my FPS low or jumping around?

  • On battery. The most common cause by far. Laptops and phones routinely halve the refresh rate when unplugged.
  • Other tabs and apps. A video playing somewhere else is competing for the same GPU.
  • Heat. A machine that has been under load for ten minutes is a slower machine.
  • Wrong monitor. The reading follows the browser window, so drag it onto the screen you want to test.
  • Hardware acceleration off. Check your browser settings — troubleshooting guides switch it off more often than you would think.

Frame time is the budget for one frame. Type in either box.

At 60 FPS each frame gets 16.67 ms. Miss that budget and the frame turns up late.

How do I test my FPS?

Is this FPS test accurate?

For what your browser is getting, yes. It cannot see inside a game — a web page has no view into another application — so use your GPU driver overlay for that.

What is a good FPS?

60 is comfortable for everyday use and most games. 120 and above sharpens motion and cuts input lag. Video is fine at 24 to 30.

Why is my FPS stuck at 60?

Your display is almost certainly 60 Hz, or a power saving mode has dropped it to 60. Browsers paint in step with the screen, so the screen is the limit.

Does it work on a phone?

Yes. Charge it first — many phones drop a 120 Hz panel to 60 Hz on low battery. The Phone FPS Test is tuned for mobile.
