Safari crash always happening when typing this string "what bra"

6 min read Original article ↗

I am running 2021 MBP 16" MAX 13.4 Beta (22F5037d)

In Safari I have 1Password extension installed, I have Google for search.

I am trying to look up a pocket watch brand as a gift but when I start to type in the search bar "what bra" is as far as it goes and it crashes Safari 100%.

Anyone else having similar issue to this or even exactually this too? I filled a report for it and sent in a video of it happening but wanted to see if others have seen issues similar.

I haven't encountered this issue myself, but I'm also not using a beta version of macOS. Thank you for submitting your feedback to Apple, though.

Is this a hoax or an actual bug? I’ve seen posts like this appear in other forums just recently. Only the search terms were different.

@mrbeckstrom Can you post the video you‘ve made?

For me it is an actual bug that I have reported. I did capture a video of it happening.

That’s really weird. First thing I’d try is to disable the 1Password plugin and check if it makes a difference.

Oh, I overlooked the fact that you’re using a beta. Then it’s not that weird any more.

Just tried this and it also crashed my Safari.

EDIT: No password managers...just stock Safari. No beta software either.

So which version is it then?

No problem searching bra for me in Safari. The only unwanted thing it does is a weird searching history for me. Maybe you should try deactivating all extensions first, then re-activate them one by one to see which causes the crash? Beta software might also be buggy sometimes so it isn't something you should be worried about.

I just want to make sure you understand what I am doing when it crashes. In the address/URL box if you were to try and just type in "what brand" Safari will crash before you can type the n in brand.

I still get the same behavior with 1Password disabled.

macOS: 13.4 Beta (22F5037d)
Safari: Version 16.5 (18615.2.5.11.2)

Turn off Include

Siri

Safari Suggestions under Settings->Search tab and it goes away. Not sure why

Siri

Safari suggestions is crashing on that phrase but it clearly does.

Weird bug.

Based on the title I was thinking this thread was going to be more interesting lol

I can confirm this just happened for me. I am on 13.3.1, 14" M1 Pro MBP. Safari 16.4.

hmm. just tried it, and no crash (& on the beta before today's, which i'm downloading as i type this...)

I just updated to newest beta release and this still happens.

OS: Version 13.4 Beta (22F5049e)
Safari: Version 16.5 (18615.2.8)

For the Siri suggestions, where are you changing this? Are you saying turn off "Include search engine suggestions" in Safari -> Settings -> Search ?

i have that checked, and no issue. try unchecking (if they're checked); 'enable quick website search' and/or 'preload top hit in the background' (i have both unchecked...)

Crashes Safari V 16.4 on my Mac Studio V13.3.1 also and no extensions in Safari., actually it just shuts Safari down like I have "quit Safari". Safari can then be restarted and acts normally.

It’s Include

Siri

Safari Suggestions. As I said above. When on I get a crash. When off it works fine. Latest release of Ventura—no betas.

ok, but i was responding to the OP.

perhaps because i don't have siri enabled on my mac, i don't have a 'siri suggestions' option (just the 'include safari suggestions, which, interestingly, is unchecked and greyed out here...)

i don't have Siri enabled on my Mac either yet ALL the boxes are checked and active. Will disable siri suggestions and report back.

Edit: like you no Siri suggestions even available to check or uncheck. So, it appears the "include safari suggestions" is the culprit. I unchecked that and no crash when searching for "what bra".

You are doing it wrong! 🤣 Apple somehow disapproves of your usage and remotely killed it. 😳

hmmm, def greyed out here. i couldn't turn it on if i wanted to...

edit: this is on my M2 air. on my M2 mini, i can turn it on, but doing so still doesn't cause a crash when i type 'what brand....".... both macs are on the same OS. odd stuff

Include Safari Suggestions can be checked/unchecked if Siri is on.

"Include Safari Suggestions
Get Safari Suggestions as you type in the Smart Search field. Safari search includes suggestions from the internet, Music, the App Store, movie showtimes, locations nearby, and more. To learn more, choose Apple menu > System Settings, click Siri & Spotlight in the sidebar, then click Spotlight Privacy on the right. (You may need to scroll down.)"
