El Salvador has reached an unprecedented milestone in citizen security, closing 2024 with a homicide rate of just 1.9 per 100,000 inhabitants, positioning the nation as the safest in the Western Hemisphere. President Nayib Bukele celebrated this achievement, noting that the country had transformed from being the most dangerous in the world to this new status.

On social media, President Bukele shared that this achievement also marks a historic reduction in violence, with December 2024 being the safest month in the country’s history. The month saw only one homicide and 30 days without violent deaths. Bukele expressed optimism, stating that if every month had mirrored December, El Salvador could potentially compete for the title of the safest country in the world.

El Salvador’s Attorney General, Rodolfo Delgado, also praised the country’s progress. He pointed out that the 114 homicides in 2024 represented a significant drop from the previous year, with 40 fewer murders than in 2023. This success was largely attributed to the coordinated efforts of the police and prosecutors, resulting in a 98.2% resolution rate for homicide cases. Delgado emphasized that this progress reflects a deep commitment to ensuring peace and security for Salvadorans.
The implementation of the Territorial Control Plan, alongside the state of exception that has been in place since March 2022, was credited for these remarkable results. By the end of 2024, the country had achieved 279 days without homicides. Overall, President Bukele’s administration has recorded 797 days free of murders, with 684 of those days occurring under the state of exception.

As the country continues to transform, El Salvador is emerging as an example of what can be achieved through sustained efforts to combat violence. With 2024 now confirmed as the safest year in the country’s history, Salvadorans can look forward to a future of peace and opportunity.
