The path and city dots are traced from NASA/EclipseWise.com/timeanddate.com predictions. The color wash is a smooth interpolation between the 39 known cities' real coverage values (not new data), it fades out away from them, since coverage doesn't fall off evenly with distance from the path. Use the per-city contact times for exact viewing plans.

Path of totality
Iceland and the 7 Spanish cities above. The sky darkens like dusk, the Sun's corona appears, and temperature drops. Safe to remove eclipse glasses ONLY during the brief totality window.
Deep partial (90%+)
Madrid, Paris, London, Casablanca. A dramatic thin crescent Sun near sunset, noticeably dimmer light, but never dark. Keep eclipse glasses on the entire time.
Moderate partial (~70%)
Rome and similar coverage. A visible bite out of the Sun, subtler dimming. Glasses required throughout.
⚠ Eye safety
Never look at the Sun without ISO 12312-2 certified eclipse glasses or a handheld solar viewer, ordinary sunglasses are not safe at any level of coverage, including 99%. The ONLY exception is inside the path of totality, during the exact totality window for that city, when the Sun is fully covered. Cameras, binoculars and telescopes need their own solar filter over the front lens; eclipse glasses alone are not enough for optical aids.
Did you miss 2026? 2027 is the big one
On August 2, 2027, totality lasts up to 6 min 23 s over southern Spain, north Africa and Egypt. It is nicknamed the Eclipse of the Century, and it is the longest one on easily accessible land this century, more than three times the 1m 49s you get in Spain in 2026.

Will I be able to see the August 12, 2026 eclipse from my city?
If your city is in the path-of-totality table above, yes, the Sun is fully covered for up to 1m49s. Everywhere else in Europe and North Africa sees a partial eclipse; check the deep-partial table for coverage at Madrid, Paris, London, Rome and Casablanca.
Why is the Sun so low in the sky during totality in Spain?
The eclipse reaches Spain in the early evening, roughly 1 to 2 hours before sunset, with the Sun only 2 to 12 degrees above the horizon depending on the city. Look toward the west-northwest and pick a viewpoint with a clear, unobstructed horizon.
What if it's cloudy on eclipse day?
There's no rain check for a single city, but the path of totality is over 1,000 km long, so mobile viewers can chase clear sky along the track. August is generally dry across northern Spain.
Is it safe to look at the eclipse without glasses?
Only inside the path of totality, and only during the exact totality window listed for that city. Everywhere else, including 99.9% coverage in Madrid, keep ISO 12312-2 eclipse glasses on for the entire event.
When's the next eclipse visible from Europe?
A partial lunar eclipse on August 27 to 28, 2026 (safe to view with the naked eye, no filters needed), then a total solar eclipse on August 2, 2027 crossing Spain, North Africa and Egypt.
