Registrar that catered to registrants likely to receive DNS abuse complaints loses its accreditation.
In the end, it wasn’t as bulletproof as advertised.
ICANN has officially terminated the registrar accreditation of Fewmoretaps OU, d/b/a TrustName.com.
The move comes after ICANN sent a flurry of breach notices to the Estonian domain registrar. It complained about how TrustName was handling abuse complaints.
TrustName’s website previously stated that it was the “most trusted independent domain registrar for privacy-conscious individuals and businesses in sensitive niches. Count on us to be your ‘bulletproof’ domain registrar.”
Now, it states that it is “built for businesses in competitive niches that often face false or bad-faith abuse reports.”
In other words, it was attracting clients who receive a lot of abuse reports, and ICANN did not think it was handling them appropriately.
It’s not clear how big the registrar is. While the website boasts that it’s “Trusted by millions of domain owners,” the latest Verisign reports show that it has about 4,000 .com domains under management.
