Quests, Orbs, and Play Quest+: Discord’s bet that gamers will accept ads if they look like gameplay

Discord’s Play Quest+ pitch starts with a familiar loop: you accept a Quest, play a Battlefield match, watch a progress bar fill inside Discord, then claim Orbs. There is no pre-roll and no skip button. Discord is not asking gamers to watch ads. It is asking them to complete them.

That is the product-design bet. Wrap the ad in a game-shaped task, pay the user in cosmetics and an earn-only currency, and prove to publishers that the click turned into actual play. Quests and Orbs are the machine that makes it feel like loot instead of inventory.

A Quest that looks like a match

Discord’s official name for the unit is Quests: a rewarded ad format where players “discover games and new content while earning rewards” and advertisers “authentically reach their audience,” according to the Discord Quests FAQ. Engagement is opt-in. Personalization can be turned off. Teens aged 13–17 are capped at three Quests a day.

Turning personalization off does not kill the product. You can still find Quests in Quest Home under Discover > Quests. Discord repeats the optional line because mandatory ads would read as a broken social contract.

On desktop, a Quest often arrives as a small bar in the bottom-left of the app. Hover, accept, and the transaction is explicit: do this, watch the bar fill, claim the reward.

A banner interrupts a conversation. A Quest proposes a challenge after it: watch a trailer, launch a game, stream it, or finish an in-game event. The chrome still looks like an ad. The shape looks like a battle pass.

Availability is not universal. Some Quests are region-locked. Linux cannot currently earn Quest rewards. Mobile accept, track, and view are still beta.

From trailers to time-on-game to in-game events

Each generation answers advertisers who said: cool community, prove it moved the KPI.

FormatWhat you doWhat Discord is selling
Video QuestWatch a trailer or season drop on desktop or browserAwareness with a completed view
Play Quest (2024)Play or stream a title for a set time, often around 15 minutesAcquisition and session time
Play Quest+ (2026)Finish a tutorial, complete a match, play with a friendA retention-shaped in-game event

A Video Quest is still an ad, just one you opted into. Discord says the video pauses if you switch windows and saves progress so you can resume. It proves attention, not play.

Play Quests, launched in 2024, change the ask from viewing to time. Discord detects the game on the desktop app. “Play for 15 minutes” is more useful than a finished trailer, and still blunt: time can mean interest, AFK, or someone farming Orbs.

Play Quest+ is the lower-funnel upgrade. Discord announced it on August 20, 2026, with the first campaign going live in early September with EA and Battlefield 6 Season 4. Instead of paying for minutes, the advertiser pays for events that look like product success. After you link accounts, progress syncs into Discord in real time through Discord’s Social SDK and Events API. The launch notes do not name the exact Season 4 objective or reward beyond a “gameplay objective.”

The Social SDK is the real ad tech. The Quest is just the receipt.

Adam Bauer, Discord’s global VP of advertising, told Digiday the jump in one sentence: “What we’re going from is a time-based action with a Play Quest to a Play Quest+, which is an event-based action.” Play Quest paid for time. Play Quest+ pays for retention-shaped time.

Andrea Hopelain, EA’s SVP of global marketing, supplied the publisher quote Discord wanted in that same press release: Play Quest was “a vital component in getting more players in and keeping them engaged for longer periods of time.” Play Quest+ is “the next iteration,” to be deployed “across our blockbuster franchises.”

Orbs are the battle pass Discord will not call a battle pass

Orbs are what you get when a chat app needs a battle pass but does not want to admit it sells inventory. They are account-wide, not server-specific. You cannot buy them with cash. You earn them by finishing Quests (plus select promotional offers), then spend them in the Shop on Orb-exclusive profile junk and 3-day Nitro credits, as Discord describes in its Orbs FAQ and Orbs blog post.

You cannot gift Orbs, convert them to money, transfer them between accounts, or spend them on partner-branded Shop items, gifts, or recurring Nitro and Boosting. Purchases are final. Shop prices, and how many Quests equal one 3-day Nitro credit, are not public.

Eligible Nitro subscribers get a 1.2x Orb multiplier on Quest Orb rewards (Quests starting May 8, 2026) and a 250-Orb monthly drop. Nitro Basic and Nitro claimed through Nitro Credits do not get the multiplier, per the Orbs FAQ and Discord’s May 2026 Nitro Rewards announcement. Eligible Xbox Game Pass subscribers who link Discord get the same multiplier, monthly drop, and Shop discounts; the multiplier does not stack with Nitro.

The loop does two jobs: a hamster wheel for free users, and a retention perk that pulls Quests into Discord’s paid ecosystem.

The numbers Discord wants printed — and what they skip

Discord reports a 96% median Quest ad completion rate as of March 31, 2026, in the Play Quest+ launch release. Label that Discord-reported. It is impressive until you remember the user opted in to get paid in hats.

The earlier Battlefield 6 Play Quest, before Quest+, is the load-bearing case. Discord and EA’s developer case study (Quest flight August–November 2025; internal data February 2026) reports:

  • 4 million Play Quest completes at $0.15 cost-per-complete
  • 2.04 million of those from new players
  • 81% of Quest participants still playing within 30 days of launch
  • Players who linked Discord: +22% days launched and +18% session length
  • Discord-powered social features via account linking, including unified friends lists and rich presence: +29% 28-day retention

Those are Discord/EA-reported numbers, not independent incrementality.

A Genshin Impact Play Quest around a major update, Discord says, attracted millions of participants and generated an 80% increase in playtime the week the Quest ran. Also Discord-reported.

What the slides do not measure is just as important:

  • Who would have played anyway?
  • Who installed extra software, linked an account, or sat in a match for 700 Orbs?
  • Who got Quest-banned, including people who simply AFK’d a game Discord later treated as inauthentic?

Claire Holubowskyj of Enders Analysis told Digiday the awkward version: the Discord users most likely to take a Battlefield Quest+ will already know Battlefield, which limits incrementality. EA’s win may be network effects and session quality, not net-new awareness.

Why this can work on this audience

Discord users already treat the app as a game overlay: rich presence, LFG, voice while they play. Bauer told Digiday that 90% of Discord users play games weekly. A Quest that says “play a match with a friend” is closer to what they were going to do than a banner in a feed.

The design trick is simple:

  1. The ad looks like a challenge. Same UI language as a battle pass.
  2. The payout is status, not cash. Decorations, nameplates, a sliver of Nitro. Cheap for Discord, visible to friends.
  3. Orbs create a sink. One 15-minute watch does not feel like selling out; a stash you can convert into a profile flex does.
  4. Publishers get attribution they never had on Discord. Account link plus Events API equals “they finished a match,” not “they hovered the tile.”
  5. It is still optional. The FAQ even tells you how to kill personalization.

The charitable user take, recurring since Quests ramped: if Discord is going to monetize, this beats banner ads, paywalled DMs, or Nitro-gating voice. That segment would rather farm a trailer than watch the free product get worse.

EMARKETER frames the same move from the marketer side: Discord is walking ads down the funnel. In an EMARKETER/Discord survey, 45% of US marketing professionals said they see value in rewarded ads on community platforms.

The two-sided deal

Publishers get cheap completes and a social graph. Discord gets an ads business that does not require turning every channel into Facebook. Users get loot if they play along.

Linking is the real product. Quest+ only works if you connect Discord to EA, or whoever is paying. That is also how Discord becomes infrastructure inside the game: invite Discord friends from the Battlefield 6 party list, rich presence, a unified friends list. The ad unit and the social layer are the same pipe. Discord is not just selling impressions. It is selling being in the game client.

Discord has said it wants to expand Play Quest to support a wider range of brands and advertisers. That is a direction, not a claim that Quest+ inventory is already open to non-game brands.

Where the bet cracks

It is still an ad, and people know. Popups, Quest bars, “accept this” chrome. Threads asking for a permanent off switch go back years. Some Nitro subscribers treated Quests as a broken deal: I already pay. Multipliers and monthly Orb drops soften that, and also bind Nitro more tightly to the ads machine.

The economy is engineered scarcity. Orbs cannot be bought, rewards rotate, some Quests are region-locked. That creates grinders and people who feel the Shop is a slot machine for cosmetics they used to ignore.

Fraud is already a product problem. Public completer tools exist that fake the appearance of play. Discord’s Warning System says Quest-related violations can mean losing eligibility or having rewards pulled. Enforcement against inauthentic Quest completion has been public since at least April 2026; community reports include 15-day Quest feature limits and false flags on people who just AFK a game. If Play Quest+ pays for matches and friend sessions, the incentive to fake those events only goes up. If the ad looks enough like gameplay, someone will write a script that looks enough like a player.

When the costume falls off

Play Quest+ holds if it stays optional, if event tracking does not punish legitimate players, and if publishers can show lift beyond fans who would have played anyway. It fails the day Quests feel mandatory, Quest+ events get botted at scale, or Nitro buyers decide they are paying and watching ads. Then the costume falls off, and it is just an ad network with a very good community attached.

Discord’s actual innovation is making the ad the same shape as the reason people open the app.
