OSS models decisively overtook Proprietary models in openrouter market share
Charts below track how API traffic is distributed across LLM labs on OpenRouter, updated daily. Main fact we want to highlight here is the explosion in popularity of OSS models. Huge thanks to OpenRouter for publishing this data.
Intro
The data below contains compilation of the daily token consumption number published by OpenRouter, updated every day. We pick the top 10 labs and analyze their models' usage numbers across all providers.
OSS vs Proprietary Token Share
From June 2026, the OSS models have taken a decisive lead over proprietary models. Exactly 3 months ago in March 2026, it was a 60-40 split in favor of Proprietary models. As of mid June 2026, the split reversed to 60-40 in favor of OSS models (analysis of ~6 Trillion tokens per day). Note that while absolute token consumtion rose for both OSS and Proprietary (mouseover to see), OSS rose much faster.
Compares total token share of open-source / open-weight labs vs proprietary labs.
Methodology
- Data source: OpenRouter aggregate daily usage across all API labs.
- Tokens: Input + output tokens combined per lab per day.
- Partial-day exclusion: The latest day is always dropped because it contains incomplete data.
- Lab: A model creator company as opposed to API host (e.g. OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Mistral).
- Free-model exclusion: Usage of
xiaomi/mimo-v2-pro-20260318is excluded for March 18 – April 2, 2026 because the model was offered for free during that period, which would otherwise distort market share figures.
