Words to live by

I wrote the following document about 2 years ago. It sits on the first page of each of my journals - I copy it over each time I start a new one.

Sharing it with a few people in the past felt like a deeply intimate act. I felt so close to the person; like they knew the essence of me.

Can’t say exactly why, but I wanted to share here. 🤷🏼‍♂️🙂 -

I am writing this document as a way to express the principles by which I want to make decisions in my life.

It is meant to articulate my personal ethos, so that I can act in consonance with it in times of turmoil or confusion.

  • Prioritize meditation, yoga, and spiritual growth above all else.

  • Focus on what is most important, at the cost of what is very important.

  • Consciously avoid acting from fear.

  • Strive for depth in all areas - relationship, learning, work.

  • Invest time in artistic and creative pursuits.

  • Care for the space around you. Live in cared-for spaces.

  • Spend time in nature, away from cities and people.

  • Try to read and write everyday.

  • Exercise, and care for the body.

  • Express non-violently, and help others express their greatest needs.

  • Nurture and deepen relationships.

  • Be financially independent, in that it is never necessary to ask other people for resources.

  • Cultivate playfulness and curiosity where and whenever you can.

  • Be unaffected by trivial things, and other peoples’ opinions.

  • Share what you think is valuable with those around you.

  • Think long term, and think big, in whatever you do.

What do I want to be when I die?

  • Great at yoga

  • A sower of great people

That’s all.
