An End to End Encrypted Website / Builder

When I was surfing the internet, I found a newly released jaw-opening project. The thread is here The project is call Privapps Notebook. It states:

This application is an End to End encrypted notebook that can only be viewed, edit, or shared by the permitted user. Unless the E2E key or your device is compromised, no one can view the content.

I am not sure if it is intended or not, the author only mentioned it is a notebook that “can be shared with your friends”. It is way more than that, it is an End to End encrypted Website and a Website builder. You have let hand side menu and then “view all” button allows you to do the searching, which arguably better than GitHub pages .

A little awkward is that if you only use it as a notebook, users always append and edit later on, and the first version does not even have that, which is on the wish list. Anyway, let’s see what it looks like

I have created the Universal Declaration of Human Rights from UN.org with the language of English, Chinese, and Russian, this is what it looks like:

This is the link I created from their demo site, not sure how long it would be last, as it says only for demo purposes.

Universal Declaration of Human Rights
Same but with Password: 1984

In their demo, you can put a password inside an end-to-end encrypted website, which can make it even more secure.

After a few hours of using it, here is my conclusion

Pros:

  • It is an excellent end-to-end encrypted website builder
  • The native markdown support makes it much easier to build up a website, arguably easier than Github pages.
  • The “View All” button and search within the browser make this app shine.

Cons:

  • No version control, no edit. I think it is the nature of anonymous and secure. The missing edit function makes the notebook awkward. Maybe the author wants you to keep save it as a file?
  • The site is not able to be indexed by search engines. This might be by design as an end-to-end site is not supposed to or not able to be indexed. It is very interesting that “Single Page Application” can not be indexed by search engines, which used to be one of biggest weaknesses, and it becomes one of the biggest features here.
  • URl is too long and no QR code

Anyway, I really like this app. I can also see how this app can be misused. In my opinion, it has the potential of punching a hole on the internet.
