Geely challenges BYD with 2.2 MW charging technology

Today, Geely Auto officially unveiled its “AI-driven” charging technology, “Geely Smart Charge.” which is powered by Geely’s energy large model, Xingrui PowerMind. The centrepiece of the announcement is the new Geely Smart Charge station, which features a single-gun peak power output of 2,250 kW, setting a new industry record.

According to Geely, it has integrated its Xingrui PowerMind energy model to enable three core functions: Extreme Charge, Smart Charge, and Auto Charge. By utilising thermal prediction algorithms, the system can forecast battery temperature changes 30 seconds in advance, dynamically adjusting charging power to keep the battery’s average temperature below 55°C and peak temperatures strictly under 65°C.

According to test data from the China Automotive Technology and Research Centre (CATARC), a Lynk & Co 10 model equipped with this technology achieved a peak charging power of 1,093 kW. During a charge from 10% to 97%, the battery maintained temperatures below 55°C for 57% of the total charging time, with a maximum recorded temperature of 64°C.

Geely also introduced its new generation of Aegis Golden Brick ultra-short blade batteries:

• 12C battery: Featured in the Lynk & Co 10 and Zeekr 001, this 395 mm battery achieves a peak charging rate of 12C. Under normal temperatures, it can charge from 10% to 70% in approximately 4 minutes and 30 seconds, and from 10% to 97% in about 8 minutes and 40 seconds.
• 6C battery: The 370 mm version, debuting in the new Geely Galaxy E5, offers a peak charging rate of 6C, achieving a 10% to 70% charge in approximately 8 minutes and 25 seconds.

Infrastructure and incentive

By the end of 2027, the company aims to deploy over 100,000 charging guns nationwide, with more than 50,000 being Geely Smart Charge units, ensuring coverage across all counties in China.

To support the rollout, Geely announced a new user incentive policy. First-time owners of new models equipped with Geely Smart Charge technology will receive a charging allowance of 1,000 yuan ( 150 USD) annually for two years (totalling 2,000 yuan / $300), valid for vehicles purchased before January 1, 2028. Additionally, the battery warranty for both new and existing eligible models has been upgraded from 8 years/150,000 km to 8 years/200,000 km.

Geely introduced this technology back in April this year, and we also reported on it at the time. Once charging reaches the megawatt level, the improvement in charging times seems to be very limited, and this charging speed demonstrated is actually slower than CATL’s third-gen Shenxing battery. To compete with BYD, charging speed alone isn’t enough, building charging stations is crucial. After all, BYD will complete construction of 20,000 flash-charging stations this year.
