10 Years of Stremio – The Stremio Blog

While we haven’t made any birthday post in the past, we thought we should today as it’s Stremio’s 10th birthday!

It’s certainly been a long road to get here, one that brought many great developers from all over the world together under Stremio’s flag, we hope it was as enjoyable for you (the users) as it was for us.

You may be wondering what it takes to keep a worldwide phenomenon such as Stremio running. We won’t lie, it takes everything you have, when one team ends their work shift, another from the other side of the planet takes over in order to ensure that Stremio’s user services and infrastructure are running smoothly at all times. There are numerous developers working on usually more than one platform each in order to update (and create new) apps for over 10 different platforms.

Stremio started as a passion project created by two friends (a developer and a graphic designer), it had a few other names and attempts until it settled on “Stremio” on the 9th of February 2015, the same day that the “strem.io” domain was purchased. Our story is about Stremio though, not the road that led up to it, so we decided that Stremio’s birthday should be on the day that it got its true name on.

Let’s take a look back in time at Stremio’s history.

Stremio Brand Evolution

Stremio’s Logo

You may be asking yourself “why 3?”, but we love a good mystery and we hope you love one too, because we’re not saying!

Stremur, the Stremio Mascot

In 2017, we realized Stremio needed a friendly face to represent our streaming family, so we decided on a fluffy bellied blue cat with glasses that just loves slacking off and watching movies. The Stremio mascot was initially called “Stremurrr”, but was renamed to “Stremur” in 2023 when the logo, mascot and apps were officially redesigned.

To reimagine our beloved mascot, we collaborated with Maxim Cerevcov, whose stunning artwork earned 3rd place in the 2021 Stremio Art Contest. You can explore all the submissions to the contest in the Stremio Art Gallery.

UI Design Evolution

Stremio v1 to v3 were all released in 2015 and used the same design (v2 released on the 6th of June and v3 released on the 13th of September).

Stremio v3 brought new features such as the Trakt.tv integration and Board page. A fun fact about the early versions of Stremio is that the app window used to be semi-transparent, you can still see this effect and how the app looked back then in this recording:

Stremio v4 released on the 4th of April in 2017, and the last redesign happened on the 25th of August, 2023.

Let’s look back at how the Desktop UI evolved for the app through the years with some screenshots:
