      in that case what i meant to say was i dont like where the songwriting of this section is going right now so i think i have to back up a few bars and take it again from there. that line reflects my feelings on the situation. honesty is the best policy, even if through metaphors. the 'porridge' in this case being that section of the song, 'eating/heating' being writing, and 'wrong amount of time' means just it was going wrong.
     you can see how that line operates as a brute makeshift stepping stone, to get me promptly back to the next verse. while attempting to also apologize for it or at least acknowledge the mis step

      that's just a plain synth with distorion on it, but my hands are doing most of the work to make it sound like it does, based on what i play on the keyboard with it. for example, to get 2 seconds worth of that sound, my fingers are probably playing about 30 notes, on a total of 6 different pitches. i'm playing about the same thing with both hands, a minor 7th apart, while spastically repeating the same note but also putting something like 2 chromoatic grace notes under it. so it's 90% performance, 10% instrument

      sometimes the remedy for this, when you feel too stuck on the 'normal path', is to hurl yourself more forcefully OFF the path. just for now, try making it really bad on purpose. need to knock yourself out of the comfort zone

example: "break through addiction" vs "i'm addicted to breakthroughs." yes, i am still talking about this shit.

      of the 2 items in quotes, i find the second one much more clear. Reading your original description of the problem, it sounds like you are saying you are favoring the other one, but that makes no sense to me. the second one seems to me by far more clear. in fact i often remove spaces from 2-word phrases when necessary to make them more clear. a habit i may have picked up from dutch. for example, "speedbump" is a candidate for this, surely. Especially the way you just used it, because you listed 2 items, and one of them was 1 word and the other one was 2. so it was 2 items in 3 words. so when reading it quickly, it looks kind of like 3 things. also it seems arbitrary why "speed bump" has a space and "pot hole" didnt. i say "speedbump or pothole" is much more clear, visually, as 2 items

      when writing, occasionally the melody/chords will try to get ahead of the lyrics. and as soon as this happens, the whole machine withers to a halt within seconds.
     however, the words are sometimes allowed to get ahead of the music by maybe a quarter of a second. you think of words and then a quarter of a second later you melodify it with chords etc.
     Also occasionally a fun exercise is to come up with titles. just a title that sounds cool, without any music. then melodify them later.
     Also, another way the words can get ahead is when theyre not exact. so for example, if the melody starts to keep getting ahead and everything is drying up, i remind myself to push back into the words realm and just go and brainstorm what i want the next part to talk about. and then i can paraphrase it musically.
     Also what can happen sometimes is the first idea for a song will be an entire section of melody (usually a chorus, or sometimes first verse). then later the words have to be found, which is usually a very tedious and long search process.
     so if i may attempt to summarize,...... the melody never gets more than 1 section ahead, and the words never get more than 1 line ahead. and in both of those cases it's almost always exclusively in the case of the first idea. and then generally as the songwriting moves forward, the melody has a tendency to TRY to get ahead, but when it does for more than 1 second it sucks the life out of everything and i have to remind myself to get the words back on board

(count them up and then tell the computer to give you a random number up to that number, and pick that one). the reason i say IMMEDIATELY is because if you spend any more time looking at the list, you may chicken out on all of them one by one

      the language analogy is of course my standard analogy. if you try to 'study' the mechanics before doing it, it wont make any sense to you. like learning 'grammar', think back to studying english grammar, at, let's say, age 8, for example. was that before you could speak, or after? it was after. if you tried to study english grammar before you could speak, it wouldnt make any sense. and it barely makes any difference on how you speak, because you already know how to use it without knowing you know

I was wondering what that song means to You? (note: I dont think there is a "right" or "wrong" way to interpret a song; everyone interprets art differently based on their own experiences and I think that's beautiful. But nonetheless, I'm still curious about how much our takes differ)

      the 2 things most memorable to me, which i always say in response to this, are things relating to the selection process, and the production schedule. for the selection process it's my main example of the explicit failure of over thinking. i had it down to about 20 choices for which song to choose, and then one by one i ruled out each one "no, not this one" "no, not this one" "no, not this one" etc, and then i had ruled them all out. so in a fit of rage, i uncancelled all of those semifinalists and on a total whim picked one that was probably my least favorite, on purpose (it only had the first line so far, 'just did a bad thing' and just seemed totally weak and useless, despite the fact that it was a semifinalist.) As soon as i started writing on it, i realized that this was a great choice, because in fact when you have something weak to work with, it ignites the creative engines with more power. and i noticed this within the first 16 bars or so, i said 'wow, i feel more alive now because im forced to compensate for a weak first line'. maybe in fact the 'cancel' line is coming from the fact that the other 'better' songs were cancelled.
     anyway, the other thing notable for me about this song has to do with the production schedule, because i had recently fallen off the 2 week schedule and was kind of dangling by a thread, in shambles and tears. but it was done in 4 weeks instead of two. which is much quicker than it usually is without a schedule, because i'd just been on the habit of doing it on schedule so i was still relatively quick, but it was slower than a schedule. so sometimes it feels like a 'sweet spot', as i sometimes say, i accidentally worked on it for too long and not long enough, which inadvertantly was maybe just the right amount of time

      i can probably spill the beans on this one because it's very old technology, probably been around since the 1930s and everyone's been using it ever since, on everything, but especially on radios and broadcasting and in retail stores. it's called "dynamic range compression" and it levels off the volume, making the loud parts quieter and the quiet parts louder. applying this in various ways is basically how you get all your musicians strapped together like they're coming out of the same box. the devil is in the details of course, but for the problem you suggested, 'compressor' is the main device used for this. the only confusing thing is the title. 'compressor' might make you think it has something to do with files or data but it's a totally different thing same name sorry about the confusion in that regard

     but i'll tell what i crave, what i thirst for desperately, in video content these days, when someone has to present information. i wanna see a human ass being, real person, on camera, holding a physical piece of paper that generally has the information you wanna say, and youre just telling the information. youre just hangin out being a real person not reading an exact script, just talking about the information and looking at the paper as necessary. and if they tell me to like and subscribe or whats 'coming up' later then i punch a hole in the screen usually

      i am assuming that you are doing this music stuff because you fell in love with music at some point. so that love will guide you to what you want to do.
     since i told you earlier what NOT to do on bass, i suppose i have to tell you what i think you should do instead..... it's probably a good idea to just start playing the bass along to songs. you can mute the bass track on the song (nowadays you can do this in a million ways, but probably the easiest way is to just play the track through your phone speaker without headphones. poof, no bass!) and play your own bass through amplification so you can hear your bass but not the song's bass. and that's it, you'll figure out what you need to do. the other thing i would suggest is definitely dont choose artists who have a habit of being complicated like me

      the song was done on 4.27.19. Then for the video, which i started immediately after, i slipped and fell DEEP into a rabbit hole of "3D animation". i had already done bits of 3D in almost every video, but for this one i wanted to try doing the whole thing in 3D graphics. so yeah i slipped and fell into a rabbit hole and changed the whole system. Then when i was finally ready to do videos again, i still had half a video (well, 25% of a video) for princess that was from the old system. so this one has to be a 'frankenstein' with the first 25% being in a different world than the remaining 75% (as you can probably see.) I decided i would rather make a fully new video for my first video on the new system before attempting a frankenstein. this is a good reminder to myself actually, that these frankensteins can and will eventually get done (i have surely more frankensteins to this day)

      well, this issue can of course be maximum confusing for everyone, at least for now while we get used to it and learn to understand what it is, what it's not, and what it means and doesnt mean. However, it's not nearly as bad as you think, and in some ways it's absolutely wonderful. let me just disect one of your points here: you say no one cares because the end result is the same..... Even if that's true, imagine if the quantity was cranked up to a trillion. whatever becomes overflowingly abundant becomes de-valued. so now no one cares about the fake version either, just because there is SO much of it, it becomes worthless. now, true, also, that that also means that it devalues any kind of thing that SOUNDS LIKE something the machines would cough up, and that may be considered unfortunate for human people who were making.... lets say 'normalish' music before, .... but the effect that this has on everyone is it cultivates a huge thirst for something new and different. whatever it is that the machines cant cough up, that's what will be desired. this has always been true, but now it's accelerated. yes, people will be using the machines in all kinds of ways up down and sideways, in fantastically creative ways (which perhaps older people will not quite understand), and then at the same time there will also be some people that just choose not to use it, and they reap some pretty crazy advantages from NOT using it. in many ways this is analogous to the invention of synths, the invention of drum machines, the invention of SAMPLING ("effortless, he just stole someone elses song and rapped over it!"), PITCH-CORRECTED VOCALS ("but she cant even sing, shes not a real singer" etc), and so on. All these may be horrifying concepts at first, but the advantages are very genuine, AND the benefits of NOT using them are also genuine. AND, also true, the major thing that really truly moves the needle is CONNECTION with audiences. so as long as your audience is human, they are going to care deeply about the human presence in the art. Difficult to prove at times, yes, this may be. but that is also a very fun and interesting game that will become EXTREMELY satisfying to win, for both the artist and the audience.
     that being said, i will not be using it at all, for the forseeable future. similar to my decision not to use loops, and not to use any pitch correction. this is certainly not to frown on anyone who does, it's just that i have some very interesting skills in terms of songwriting and playing, which can be used very much to my advantage. The key, of course, is to steer it clear of the generic. For weirdo artists like me, for example, it's a license to not be ashamed of being weird and different.       ok so in 2009 i finally got fed up with the fact that i didnt seem to be writing any songs despite the fact that i felt like i had more than enough skills to be able to do so. so as a last resort i deeply downgraded my standards and just started scribbling garbage on paper. i wrote a beginning about 'i dont have enough time to say the things i want to say' etc, something very much resembling the first verse you'd recognize from that song. (but also not quite the same). that song lived only on paper and also didnt have the 'la de da' chorus, it did something else instead and ended after about a minute and a half.
     fast foward to 2012 i finally got fed up with how much songwriting i had done without knowing how to organize it or choose which ones to work on. so i built a master list of everything i had, in order of when it was written, and then i started working on each one. the "i dont have enough time" bit came up, and i fixed the verse, and wrote a chorus (the "la de da" chorus that you would recognize).
     fast forward to 2017, i'd figured out how to finish and produce songs, but i was really fed up with how long it took. i was trying out a 2-week schedule, alternating between song and not-song, always with a video, alternating whether or not i appear on camera in the video. it SEEMED to work ok with a non-song video called 'soap tips', and next would be to do a song video with me appearing in it. i should have known that this would be impossible in 2 weeks but i tried it anyway. on the selection process i landed on the 'la de da' song, which still hadnt been updated since 2012, so it had just 1 verse and chorus written. BUT.... the day after selection, i started doubting the selection. i actually wanted to switch to a different song. then i went to get a haircut and i was thinking about the selection, as thinking about the 'la de da' song again, and then for some reason just at the moment i was getting into the chair, (songwriting loves to work like this) the first 3 lines of the second verse just rammed itself into my head. so with that momentum i figured ok that's the selection, then at home i finished writing the rest. then i recorded it, made the video, etc, and it all took way way way way way way longer than 2 weeks

But it doesnt mean theyre not real. it just means they've put their focus into other things. there's plenty of things that i probably do boringlyer than them

Including the fact that when it does happen, what sounds the best is actually just when the vowel is the same but the end consonant is different anyway. but youre seriously shooting yourself in the foot if you try to rhyme on purpose. it's a curse for sure

      yes yes, the great trick here is you can now write about your current situation. heck, start writing about what you remember it being like to have written the previous part. write the story of how you feel now, and what that bit does or does not mean to you now. i use this trick over and over again, and it's maybe the most fun part about songwriting. especially because you thought you were screwed but then you made it meaningful, even more meaningful than it otherwise would have been. The thing that the 'songwriting gods' are always trying to hammer into us which we (as songwriters) ALWAYS keep forgetting: how do YOU ACTUALLLY feel NOW. what does this actually mean to you NOW

      you have a triplet feel (you can say it's 4/4 with triplets, or you can say it's 12/8 with eight notes, or even 6/8 depending on how big you want the bars to be on paper), you have 4-on-the-floor, which means the kick drum is hitting all 4 beats, you have snare on 2 and 4 ('backbeat'), and then perhaps what you want to know most is the percussion, there is a percussion accent happening on alternating triplets. which makes a cool pattern when you accent one out of every 2 notes when the notes are grouped in groups of 3. so if you're counting "1 trip let 2 trip let 3 trip let 4 trip let", the percussion accents (the louder notes in the tambourine or shaker or whatever) will occur on "one TRIP let TWO trip LET three TRIP let FOUR trip LET". at least this is what i recall happening. i havent really listened to the song since i saw it in the credits for marty surpreme in the cinema, but the song has been around for decades and i've heard it plenty, and to my best recollection that is what the drums and perc are doing. and the snare will give you some nice fills at the end of the 8 or 16 bar segments, usually "BAP BAP _ BAP BAP BAP" in the last two beats (or the last 6 subdivisions). hopefully my language is more or less intelligible to you. i'm trying to be broad in terms of catering the different kinds of musical or mathematical literacy you may be working with

      i think it's just a lot of experience doing songs with chords. it's not really that different from what it does at the end of the other similar parts, but it's maybe the equivalent of a behind the back throw. Honestly what that part sounds like to me is, i was feeling stuck in that same melody and basically just repetitions of that same section, and i was feeling restless, so i was getting 'differenty' with the chords to try to compensate. but really i probably would have been more satisfied if i had taken it in a whole different direction there somehow rather than just fitting more stanzas into the same box of a B section earlier established. in fact i feel very similarly about this as to a line that was brought up just the other day, in slow down, where i was also surely feeling restless and dissatisfied with just piling additional stanzas onto the same A and B sections round and round. in both cases the writing was crunched for time on a self imposed emergency schedule as a last resort attempt to save myself from myself

      these guys have an amazing filmmaking strategy that relies deeply on improv and editing, and then assembling it into a coherent story in a way that in always feels like a magic trick, keeping you wondering which came first, the writing or the action (and sometimes the answer is not what you think). Unfortunately what starts to ruin this wonderful game is the encroachment of ai. not the use of ai per se, but the encroaching thought of "they could/should have" used it, starts to ruin the amazing game that this team has with their filmmaking method. also one of the strongest points about the nirvanna-the-band content is that the piano playing always matches, and it's actually quite tragic to see jay's hands not matching the sound, giving first time viewers the impression that this is just another movie with a non-piano player playing the piano, which of course it's not. it seems clear to me that what happened is he's probably playing back to the future stuff but they couldnt clear it. so that is a major unfortunate weakness of the movie. generally it's quite strong, perhaps about as strong as the viceland series

      you can get into this game of organizing all your wisdom and everything you know, but ultimately youre not going to prevent the ebb and flow of different realizations, different mentalities, different strategies, etc. It's nice to write things down and compare notes, but you can't promise yourself to uphold every mindset all the time

      basically during the creation process (whether it's writing, production, whatever) you basically just have to have a lot of faith. because every good move that gets made feels like it came by total magic. and then in between those magic waves it's dreadful and nothing happens and nothing works. then whoosh in comes the big magic wave and a bunch of great moves are made, etc. A lot of faith is required, to keep yourself from freaking out in between

      there is something particularly humorous about something being hyped way up and then actually being the opposite of what it's hyped to be. this reminds me many many years ago at burger thing, when they first introduced the "chicken fries" (or maybe one of the many times the re-introduced them), they come in a tall, top-heavy box. the box is somehow designed so it has a sauce holder on top. a little slot where you can put the sauce container. They had arrows pointing to it and then had a description "Sauce goes here. Yup, we promoted the guy who invented it." whether or not they actually promoted someone, i dont know or care, but here's the thing: the sauce fits fine in the slot, but as soon as you start taking the fries out, to eat them, the box immediately falls over. it only works when the box is full of chicken fries. this brilliant invention immediately fails as soon as you start using it. What would have seemed mildly silly, became an even more humorous spectacle based on the hype story written on the box.
     i'm also thinking of debut of the tesla cybertruck, where they demonstrated the unbreakable windows by hitting it with a sledge hammer and the window immediately broke
