I made a series of predominantly black, 4K wallpapers optimised for the completely-off pixels of OLED displays. They're all rendered in code from real scientific data or simulated from physics and maths equations. No AI generation used, although AI was used to produce the code.
GPS tracks of drifting buoys, hurricane paths since 1851, the first pulsar, a humpback whale's song, mountains as stacked radar profiles, and fluids simulated from their equations. Each image comes with sources.
They are free for personal use under CC BY-NC-ND 4.0, as one 3840 × 2400 picture for every screen (a 4K TV set to Fill shows its 16:9 band pixel for pixel, a 16:10 laptop all of it), and a subset as phone versions at 1320 × 2868.
Licence
The wallpapers are CC BY-NC-ND 4.0:
- Free to use as wallpaper on any of your own screens.
- Share them with credit (Blackbody wallpapers by Alistair Roberts) and a link back to this page.
- Not for commercial use, and please don't share edited versions.
- Kerr Black Hole and Trained Network are made from share-alike data, so those two are CC BY-SA 4.0: share or adapt them freely, under the same licence.
- Each wallpaper's data sources, and their own licences, are listed when you open it.
