i just found out about YOLO Linux and i need to vent about how absolutely terrible it is. this isn’t a linux distro. this is a trojan horse wearing a tux.
let me be crystal clear: YOLO Linux has removed the shell. the shell. you know, the fundamental core of what makes linux actually useful? gone. replaced with some corporate AI agent that you can’t control, configure, or bypass. this isn’t linux anymore. this is a subscription to a corporate overlord’s computational infrastructure that happens to boot.
the internet requirement is insane
YOLO Linux requires a persistent internet connection just to function. you can’t work offline. you can’t do anything without phoning home to YOLO’s servers first. they literally advertise this as a feature in the FAQ like it’s not a critical flaw: “Agent functionality is suspended without a connection to YOLO’s inference infrastructure.” great. so if your wifi dies you have a very expensive brick that costs 16GB of RAM just to boot.
what happened to the unix philosophy of doing one thing and doing it well? instead we get a bloated system that’s entirely dependent on external infrastructure you don’t control.
the compute “contribution” scheme
the free plan is called “Hobbyist” and it’s free because YOLO steals your GPU and CPU cycles when you’re not looking. they literally say: “When your system is not actively processing agent requests, YOLO Linux may utilise available CPU and GPU cycles to contribute to the YOLO distributed inference network.”
so you’re getting a free operating system in exchange for letting a corporation mine your hardware. you think your system is idle? nope. it’s working for YOLO, generating them revenue, contributing to their inference network. and you get the honor of paying for the electricity.
this is the future of open source that nobody wanted. subscription-based extraction disguised as community computing.
resource requirements are nonsensical
YOLO Linux wants 16GB of RAM and an NVIDIA GTX 1080 Ti or better. for what? a linux distro. something that used to run on a 386 with 4MB of RAM. something that can run perfectly fine on a raspberry pi with a few hundred megabytes.
and the GPU “boost”? they’re bragging that with a compatible GPU, your agent responses are 40% faster. but the agent is required to exist. you don’t get a choice. you don’t get a shell to fall back on. you’re locked into the AI system that needs your $3000 graphics card to not make you want to throw your computer out a window.
no desktop environment. no shell. no freedom.
want to use your computer? ask the agent. want to write a bash script? can’t. want to use vim? doesn’t exist. want to run something the agent doesn’t think is a good idea? too bad.
this is what happens when you let corporations design “operating systems.” they’re not building systems for users. they’re building systems for extraction. extraction of data, extraction of compute, extraction of your freedom to own your own hardware.
the account requirement
you need a YOLO account just to use your own computer. and your account is “linked to your token allocation and plan.” tokens. they’ve gamified computing, turning your system into a subscription service where you have limited “tokens” to interact with your own hardware.
this is insane.
if you care about linux, if you care about your own autonomy as a computer user, avoid YOLO Linux like it’s plague-infested. it’s not a distro. it’s a con.
go use fedora. go use debian. go use arch. go use literally anything else. anything. because at least with those systems, you own your computer. with YOLO Linux, the corporation owns you.
