What if Zig and Rust could speak?

They would probably have a... friendly conversation

  • Rust: If it's me, base trust for the code I compile is 50/100.

  • Zig: Not all bugs are memory-related. You'll need a person that knows how to write good code after all. And another person that knows what good code looks like and reviews the first person code. And a proper test suite whose mere existence helps you fall asleep.

  • Rust: In the agentic era, I win because I have a compiler that actually catches nukes mid-air and a STABLE SYNTAX THAT DOESN'T CHANGE ASYNC PHILOSOPHY EVERY OTHER RELEASE!

  • Zig: In that stupid era you’re talking about I’ll win because I don't even have to care about LLMs vibing with me or not. I've got the love of humans, and cross-compilation that turns people on.

  • Rust: Even if this agentic era bursts like the dot-com bubble, I'm still the one people trust to build a JS runtime with. Not you. Remember Bun?

  • Zig: Ouch. But I will be the one devs actually enjoy using. You satisfy managers and investors, I gift pleasure to developers.

  • Rust: You know what else is pleasure? Sleeping. An unheard word for you I guess. But Rust devs have a lot of it, at nights. Unlike Zig-uanas.

  • Zig: There’s no way that you’re fucking jealous of our mascots... then what would you say about our 200ms incremental builds? [Rust dev moanscries]

  • Rust: 200ms to compile a program that isn't even memory-safe? What a waste of time! Oh, and that's nothing compared to the 200 minute Friday debugging session to find the data race corrupting user data. Rust devs compile 100 programs in that time while sipping their coffee.

  • Zig: Okay, you got this. They drink coffee because they have to stay awake until 3AM while serde macros are getting “rustc-certified". They need to drink coffee. At least we picked team dev instead of team beep-boop.

  • Rust: That’s beep-boob, not beep-boop. There are 10k Rust devs per each Zig dev while we didn't even try to attract them. We attracked (it's a new word, attract + attack) managers and they just forced them to pick Rust, or else...

  • Zig: ...or else they have to pick the language with highest average salary in the universe. Yeah, that's on point. You were right.

  • Rust: Can't wait until Anthropic hijacks Andrew Kelley, buys Zig & forces them to rewrite the compiler in Rust. Stay tuned for that!

  • Zig: You need to do all that to win, I just have to sit down and chill until Zig v1.0 comes out. Stay tuned for that!

  • Rust: So you wanna chill forever. Alright, have fun!
