A City Intertwined

The Bayshore Freeway was completed in 1937 and is part of U.S. Route 101, connecting San Jose with San Francisco. "The slick concrete highway was constructed to ferry affluent suburban residents to office towers downtown," writes Gregory Harris, curator of photography at the HighMuseum of Art, in photographer Mimi Plumb's new book, Blazing Light. "What initially drew Plumb to the scene was the striking light, but upon further consideration, the image seemed to ask, 'Is this progress, and who benefits?'”
