Muud.io - How Axl Rose, Jagermeister, & Red Bull inspired an app

It was just over a year ago. The previous night, Axl Rose had walked off stage in a tantrum at The O2 in Dublin. With nothing better to do for the night, my buddy Mark and I had hit Dublin’s bars and made the best of what had started off as a bad night. Now, in the cold, harsh light of day, we were suffering the consequences.

I sat slumped over a kitchen chair, nursing a lukewarm cup of coffee. Mark fumbled his iPod into the stereo dock and hit shuffle. “Playground Love” by Air - that’ll do nicely.

We sat for a few minutes, occasionally exchanging brief grunts of conversation. Two cavemen who’d recently discovered the practical wonders of fermentation.

Suddenly, and seemingly without warning, my brain lurched and then contracted. “Sad but True” by Metallica pummelled us from across the kitchen. Ouch.

Slightly reeling, I stumbled across to the iPod and mashed the skip button. “Stupid shuffle…” I muttered as I returned to the safety of my chair and now-cold coffee.

A few more minutes passed - Sufjan Stevens, Elliott Smith, and The Shins all did their best to soothe the horrors we were both experiencing. Then, “Hysteria” by Muse. The iPod was unceremoniously yanked from the dock and tossed aside.

As I sat there, contemplating the effort involved in boiling the kettle for another cup of coffee, a lightbulb flickered in the back of my mind. If only there was an app that could play songs, on shuffle, that would suit our delicate state…. And with that, an app was born. Hello, Muud.io.
