What is 静?

A number of dictionaries translates “静” as a state of being:

Quiet, Still, Motionless, Gentle, Calm, Quiescent, Tranquil, Stirless.

This is a state of being that is typically achieved by staring at a vast expanse of nature, like from the top of a mountain overlooking a valley or gorge or some equally majestic view. You are humbled by the sight and suddenly everything is put into perspective. You are insignificant and small compared to the power and view of nature. All your problems and worries suddenly seem like just a minor speck.  You use a comparative power, a reference, to achieve this type of 静.

Another method to achieve this state of being is a meditative practice where your mind focuses solely on one thing or idea, and you completely phase out everything else in your surrounding. Runners sometimes state that their runs are relaxing and meditative. Some people listen to music, write lines of code, drive for endless hours on the freeway, etc. Here you are using an activity, some form of vehicle, to achieve 静. You are in a state of being where your heart his still but you maybe still using your mind. I’ve heard this being referred to as Flow.

Finally, the third way to achieve 静 is via Meditation, where your body is still and motionless and you systematic phase out all senses and distractions until you are even unaware of your own breathing. Your mind is empty. At this stage, you carry no thoughts. People have asked me what exactly this state ‘feels’ like. The best that I can describe it is that your body is not moving but you hear everything while hearing nothing. All the sounds are independent and you can distinguish every sound from another, yet you hear them all at once. Even a slight wisp of air will feel like a chilling beam of frigidness yet you cannot actually feel it. Under the sun you will feel as though you are being roasted under the heat but you don’t actual suffer from it. Its almost as though you acknowledge those bodily feelings but you don’t feel it.
