Just quickly ranting pointing out something I see over and over again. It happens in almost any company, on every product and on any platform.
The bad practice is coined as “Newest feature wins”. This means that when a new feature gets into the system, it gets a lot more attention in the UI then it really deserves. It gets its own screen, notifications about it and accessibility from all over the place.
For an example, let’s talk about an imaginary new feature on Facebook called “Double Poke”. Once it is introduced into the system, it is tempting to place it before the Like and comment buttons and have a really different color so people can see it. After all, it’s new and shiny. The truth is, likes and comments are more important, even if they’re old. They earned and deserves their place. Let them be.
This focus on a new feature only goes away when the new new feature comes in. The old feature has to make place for the new feature.
