It was one of those weeks where decades happen when US troops started having to run around trying to dodge missiles. I'd always thought that the point of even having the US military in the region was to keep the Strait of Hormuz open. Since the US military appears to only be capable of closing the strait and creating a target-rich environment, it raises some basic questions of WTF they are doing in the middle east beyond looking pretty.

    The U.S. had an Iran deal that accomplished all of the goals that the current administration is now trying to negotiate again

    The position now is, as you point out, significantly weaker. The previous deal was made without a single shot being fired, no shock to the global economy, and no loss of standing to the U.S.
