Auto industry group calls for scrapping US gas tax, adopting vehicle fee

I am surprised that vehicle manufacturers would support a weight-based fee, given that their most profitable vehicles like SUVs and pickup trucks tend to be the heaviest.

Weight x mileage seems the most fair to me.

It should also disincentivize people from buying larger vehicles just because.

In VA, if you drive EV, we already are paying vehicle fee with the registration (in addition to the ridiculous yearly property tax and endless tolls if you want to drive 5 miles in less than an hour :) )
