Arno's Engram Keyboard Layouts
github.comSome explanation of the design principles would be welcomed. The workman (https://workmanlayout.org/#introduction ) website is really interesting in this regard, even if you disagree with the end product. [As an aside, the Svaalboard has been my saviour, that and a ludicrous amount of QMK customisation with tap-dance functionality.]
The Svalboard with just the old default QWERTY based layout was enough to save my hands after having tried pretty much every ergonomic keyboard out there. I'll never get tired of recommending this keyboard!
Colemak and Workman are weak layouts. I would not recommend them for children who have not developed the ctrl-x/c/v habit yeh, because they will never understand its pros.
"Engram is a family of keyboard layouts optimized for comfortable and efficient touch typing in different languages created by Arno Klein. You can use the open-source software to create new key layouts optimized for different languages."

But I appreciate the hand alternation as a top priority because this is where the speed begins and more load for pinkies because the hand mobility sags typically from the pinkies.
Why would the center two cols be used for such low probability symbols.
The braces being so far and tucked away make it really bad for c like languages
This seems like an insane waste to me. Especially the ones on the lower row. For me it is the strongest position.
Most people who use a keyboard aren’t using it for c like languages.
? JavaScript is c like and thr most popular in the world
Most people who use a keyboard aren't using any programming language
I dislike the middle columns so I think this is quite a cool idea.
For some people, a layout which spares the pinkies is preferable. The BEAKL layouts, for example, are optimized using a hand model which keeps the pinkies as idle as possible. Sometimes this can make all the difference.
I looked at the repo but I didn't see anything about the design principles. How does this compare to Colemak-dh on things like inward rolls and SBFs etc ...?
> How does this compare to Colemak-dh
as shit vs shit
Based on what? I specifically called for some objective measures like SBFs ...
What's the SOTA these days? I dropped out of the community a 2 to 3 years ago. At the time ISRT seemed to be one of the bests but I haven't heard anything since then.
Colemak is objectively decent !
But not for those who has no qwerty experience.
Colemak is objectively decent even if you never knew qwerty. Even if you move C V X Z you can only make a layout a tiny bit better than colemak. I don't know why you are on this crusade, its silly.
