Don’t know why this was posted, but here’s some context:

Conditions in the 1960s meant that My Lai happened 19 months before the public heard any details. The American courts martial proved to many that the fog of war wasn’t just about information; there’s also no control. Chaos was objectionable at the time. Politicians didn’t want their efforts portrayed as worse than doing nothing.

I think maybe that’s the contrast. The politicians in power today do not care if their efforts are portrayed as worst than nothing. Privately, Nixon blamed Jews for the public objection; but his party today kind of do that in public.
