George Hotz: Replacing My MacBook
geohot.github.ioThe battery life is what keeps me going back to my MacBook Pro every time I try to switch to a Linux laptop.
From what I understand, almost all linux problems in this area are firmware/driver shortcoming. So, in theory, could the Framework laptop rival Apple?
They are built from the ground up to run Linux so I assume they have access to the firmware or at least can request features from vendors?

Yes in theory.
Btw it seems that Framework has open sourced their embedded driver firmware source code:
- https://github.com/FrameworkComputer/EmbeddedController
So again, in theory there could be a much better hardware/software (linux) integration.
Not sure if there is anybody actually modding that firmware (would be cool to know).
That’s like saying “all of Somalia’s problems are people-based, so in theory, it could be like Japan”.
I would like to move off iPhone also but there is no viable alternative that isn’t worse.
> If someone makes one of these in a nice 16” form factor, OLED screen, aluminium unibody, no stupid branding everywhere, I think it might be time for a lot of developers to switch.
1000%
Since 2006 I’ve been on this same mission. Let us know when you’ve figured it out.
