When you get a motorcycle endorsement in the US, the book tells you the #1 cause of motorcycle accidents is riding a bike you don't own. When you have a bike, this is obvious because they all handle differently.
What if this turns out to be true for automated cars (even just ones with new UIs)? Won't accidents increase due to the driver's unfamiliarity with how to safely use the new systems?
Maybe they will be more cautious due to being unfamiliar with the system & car.
