The nail in the coffin was Apple's reluctance to allow their own MLX team to use the source code of Apple Neural Engine (ANE) to make performance improvements.
In other words, Apple would rather die in the AI field than open-source their ANE code to the world.
It’s just bizarre since they seemed to be the only ones designing their hardware for AI, which was a huge part of their Apple Silicone marketing.
