One simple trick to make your screenshots 80% smaller

I already have a dedicated screenshots folder, but this is the first I've heard about automatically shrinking screenshots. I feel like this would be helpful much of the time, but sometimes I would want the full-size image. Does the described process end up putting the original screenshot in the trash or something, where I could recover it from?
