Find a book by explaining what happens in it

Interesting. My description:

> First contact with aliens who live in the water and do abstract maths. They can become crystalline to speed up their thinking processes.

It didn't produce the book I was thinking of, but it did turn up one by the same author, but with a totally different plot.
