Notion to terminate accounts with Russian billing history regardless of location
notion.soI don't understand why it's acceptable in the modern world to discriminate a human being based on where they were born? I see no protests, no news about it, everyone silently agrees.
Feels like they learnt nothing from racial discrimination
It isn't discriminating on where you are born.
The people in that country can move or overthrow their government to replace it with one that isn't trying to genocide eastern Europe and install dictators in the rest of the world.
> As long as your billing information has never been associated with Russia, you will regain access to Notion once you leave the country.
They can't even move to keep the account.
Easier said than done, they are not French after all.
maybe you aren't aware, but the russians slaughtered their ruling family and installed a different government at one point, too.
there's an interesting parable in the movie A Bug's Life where the grasshoppers get a lesson from the boss grasshopper about how if the individually-puny ants ever realize that they vastly outnumber the grasshoppers, the grasshoppers wouldn't be able to steal from the ants any longer.
if every ant woke up tomorrow with an unresistable biological urge to overthrow the grasshoppers, it would be done in a day.
War is peace, liberty is slavery.
Because the bosses say so. Welcome to "democracy", whatever that means.
From the announcement: "...Due to these restrictions, on September 9, 2024, Notion will no longer provide users located in Russia access to the platform. This includes:... If any billing information connected with the workspace is currently or was previously associated with Russia, the workspace will be terminated. This is necessary for compliance with sanctions, and updating an account’s billing information will not change the restriction."
You changed the important part to ...: "The U.S. government has introduced restrictions prohibiting access to certain software products and services to any person in Russia."
I omitted this part to keep the excerpt short, yet I indicated the omission appropriately. Might have been better to keep it though, I agree.
I wonder if this applies to the tech giants as well. Aws accounts? Amazon prime? Google cloud or google workspaces customers? Apple iCloud users? Microsoft office and teams users? Azure? Slack users?
Or as usual it’s just the small fish that have to remain compliant while the big fish need can lawyer away their issues (and keep billing) ?
A 10 day notice before they delete your data?
This is unacceptable regardless of the political situation today.
The countries are not even in direct war with one another.
But this goes to show that in the event of direct war - companies may instantly delete all of your data.
Makes you think how much “soft power” the US yields with all of its tech monopolies…
> The countries are not even in direct war with one another.
Oficially. /s
Geopolitical risk needs to be factored into any cloud service. This will either be 'national champions' or better yet, company self hosted.
