Red Grapefruit Appears to Lower Cholesterol, Fight Heart Disease
sciencedaily.com> Grapefruit is known to interact with certain medications —sometimes adversely — so the researchers caution people on prescription medication to consult with their doctor or pharmacist to determine whether their medicine will interact before consuming grapefruit products. Appropriate exercise, well-balanced nutrition and avoidance of tobacco also are important factors in reducing the risk of heart disease, health experts say.
This. (From the article) if you are on almost any kind of meds, talk to your doctor before eating grapefruit if they are not already aware of this component of your diet.
I still get asked about it, and garlic quite a lot. Which is reassuring.
it can (I believe) interact with a huge number of treatments.
Ironically, grapefruit happens to interact badly with statins: the most-prescribed class of drugs used to control cholesterol.
Yea. So its super-bad for a class of people highly likely to want to try it.
I wrote my bit solely because of the intersection of 3 kinds of HN reader
1) skims subject doesn't read article (I am a serial offendor but I did read this one)
2) has bad lifestyle choices or age or predisposition from picking bad genes at birth (I might strike out on all 3)
3) will try anything, self-medicates, and sits back to see what happens (I am not in this set)
Grapefruit stops your body from metabolizing statins. This can lead to a toxic buildup of statins. CBDs can also have this side effect.
I’m not a doctor, but it seems like you’d need to have a lot of grapefruit in your system over an extended period of time to make this a problem.
I am also not a doctor but I believe this problem may eventuate with remarkably small amounts of grapefruit, like one. If you ate one at breakfast, had no other food in the stomach and had just had your meds, this might be a problem.
I’m on a statin. There’s a big warning on it. No grapefruit.
