Really cool! I would take this in a heartbeat. I wonder if it would be possible to get Wayland running on this. If it does, you could have a very simple GUI and a software manager and you are set!

Thank you! IIRC Wayland requires a working DRM layer, which has huge overheads on such a device, and it doesn't exist at this moment. Currently the fastest way to draw screen I know is to use /dev/mem, which can achieve 30+ fps for full screen updates. So I plan to modify the Xfbdev to let it use /dev/mem.

Nice project, great write-up!

Software is tough though, even the OpenMoko Neo FreeRunner had 128 MB Ram, and Illume was dropped from Enlightenment since. (There’s a note to revive it in the TODO file, though.) Of the ongoing “mobile Linux UX” efforts, Sxmo or Maemo Leste might be adaptable - they come in at below 200MB RAM on 2GB PinePhones.

Additional caveat: All these UIs have been made with touchscreens in mind.

Thank you for the information! Then we will stick on our old plan: design our own UI based on the LVGL framework - it's originally designed for the MCUs with 1MB RAM, but has pretty decent UI elements and effects.
