Borrow a botnet.. takedown the entire Tor network
hackerfactor.comThis article illustrates very well how a confrontational style can have the opposite effect.
I don't know what this guy gets out of this, with zero appreciation for all the work Tor and its volunteers have done, no acknowledgement whatsoever for the complexity of the overall project, and that other people might have other priorities of which areas need the fastest fixes. His issue is OF COURSE the only important one, everything else would be ridiculous, it's totally crazy how things have not been fixed since he started badmouthing a couple of months ago.
I don't know what he hopes to get out of this, throwing around misleading terms like "0day" and accusations. Does he think this will lead to a stronger Tor network? Is he so annoyed a the situation that he wants to take the whole project down with him? Does he want to piss off people, who will then rightfully decide to work on other aspects instead rather than having to deal with people like him?
Yes, he might have run into some problems, with a free project, and a free network, all provided to him for his benefit. None of the problems he found are amazing discoveries. Time and time again people have explained to him calmly how these issues are known and being worked on. Yes, he might have found some stopgap solutions, and potentially he could have actually helped the project to solve the issues, but instead he decided to display absolute ignorance towards other people, and other people's resources. To him, it seems to be fine as long as it "doesn't cost him anything" (quote from the post), and it is other people that will have to pay.
To put things a bit into perspective, onion service traffic accounts for ~1-5% of the overall traffic. Tor is made for a lot of things, and a lot of use cases, not only yours, man. The sad reality is that priorities are different, circumstances are different, and your desire to have a quick fix is not the same as wanting to fix things the proper way -- for your own benefit in the long term.
HN should see this as a reminder on how to not behave if you actually want to get something fixed that you're upset about.
