How is this “exclusive” if the API remains available?

    It won't be on AWS or GCP. That's pretty important to businesses already using cloud and wanting to "add AI" to their product offerings.

What's stopping Microsoft buying OpenAI like Google (Alphabet) bought DeepMind?

    Microsoft wouldn't make back the purchase price doing anything with OpenAI's IP that they can't do now.

      It would be a damn valuable acqui-hire though. I think the deepmind-acquisition comparison grandparent post makes is very apt.

    OpenAI's board of directors, I'd say. Becoming a subsidiary to Microsoft compromises their mission.

Will there be an open source alternative?

Huggingface or an academic effort could also improve the efficiency of few/one shot learning, or simply a crowdsourced model build seems within reach.

I guess to run the model you need a large machine too.
